I have no idea how the officers of Amazon feel about DRM but I once was in a customer advisory forum for Audible where we had discussions with a lot of the companies officers about their policies so they could get feedback from us. I participated in this for about 3 years. This was before they were purchased by Amazon so I'm not sure how much it tells me about Amazon. Anyway their take on DRM was close to hatred and that was almost universal. They had DRM because it was the only way they could get publishers to let them sell their books. But they saw it as a major cost both in terms of the technology and customer support. We had enough long discussions about this that I'm pretty sure those were their honest feelings and, as I said, I have no reason to think Amazon's officers also feel that way but who knows! I wouldn't be a bit surprised if they have DRM not because they want it but because they feel that they have to. Everyone keeps talking about when Amazon forces everything to be KFX but there have been a number of updates, including some fairly major ones, since KFX became available and we can still use Calibre and it's little brother Alf to protect our purchases. I wonder if this means Amazon really doesn't care? I wish I knew this was the case. So far we're in good shape and maybe it'll stay that way and maybe sometime down the road Amazon will lead the charge against DRM. They've done stranger things. Of course tomorrow they might lock everything down just to make me feel silly for saying this. Barry |

No you are quite right, sorry. Perhaps a mod could split the off-topic stuff if they have any spare time?

There's always a flurry of activity (including some topical wandering) after each announcement and then things go silent for a long time. Lather, rinse, repeat.

Apprentice Harper posted on Alf that he will probably release an updated and consolidated version of the Tools later this week. With thanks to App Harper. |

I can confirm that the version of obok about to be released by Apprentice Harper does work with the newest version of Kobo Desktop v3.19.3765 (released in the last couple of days). App Harper posted on Alf today that he will probably post new Tools this coming Monday. |

Is there any reason to upgrade for non-Kobo users?

Good question because posters on Alf have stated that some modifications are needed for the Kindle for Android App, but here's what Apprentice Harper indicated he would do: 'working on a new release of the tools, to include the update to obok, and perhaps a little something for the Linux users' (5 Jan) And, as the obok file that was provided is ready to go, then App Harper is possibly still working on the Linux stuff. So, it's a wait and see ..... |

I know the last update was only for Kobo/Obok and the version number just had an "a" added to it. It does seem like there might be something more this time, but we'll see. I gather from the comments that the problem with Kindle for Android is that its latest version doesn't allow the creation of the necessary backup file. I don't think there's much to be done on the tools side except to say you need to use an earlier version of Kindle for Android. |
