Duokan 2013/2014/2015 on Kindle 3, firmware 3.4.2

I really like Duokan for reading pdf files and I had it installed on Kindle Keyboard 3 with firmware 3.4. Apparently, firmware has been updated automatically from 3.4 to 3.4.2 and Duokan has been disabled since then. When I try to install Duokan (2015 or 2014, it doesn't make a difference), option "Update Your Kindle" is greyed out. Is there any way to install Duokan or to downgrade kindle and if so, how to disable device from upgrading automatically.

Sorry, we don't support Duokan here, it isn't our product.
Try their own website.

Seems as tho folks here got their knickers in a knot over duokan .... I would suggest you re-ask your question by restating it .... as ""How to Rollback?"" or ""Prevent Auto-update"" without the mention of that D****n product

Rolling back the firmware is difficult as no official firmware images were ever provided -- just incremental patches.

BUT. Ixtab has done most of the work for you. Kubrick (see sticky thread) has a 3.4 image.



As for Duokan -- I would bet it doesn't work because they stole the old update packager which is broken for fw3.4.2, instead of using KindleTool. But they don't want to use our jailbreak cert from KindleTool.
Good luck getting them to fix it.

See the BackDoorLock hack for preventing official updates. Requires our community jailbreak, in addition to the special Duokan-only one.

N.B. I strongly recommend you take a look at the community-developed KindlePDFViewer (non-Touch ancestor of KOReader) as an alternative reader, instead of Duokan.

If (well, when) they steal our 5.6.5 jailbreak without credit or acknowledgement -

They will have to steal our KindleTool this time (along with KUAL and MrPI).
(KindleTool has recently been updated with some changes easily recognized, even in a re-built binary.
That change can be used as a 'fingerprint'.
The fact that it speeds up KindleTool significantly is a side benefit.)

Yes - I get my 'panties in a bunch' when commercial enterprises use open source software for-profit while ignoring the license terms that lets them have the software.

The (new) government of china officially supports international I.P. protections - but its a big country and only 20 years or so has not been long enough for everyone to 'get the word'.

At least they still have that 'old school', quaint habit of taking violators of government policy out back, standing them against the wall, and shooting them.

Thanks for all tips. I have written a post on Duokan forum in English and got the answer in plain old Chinese. Since it contained no useful information, I decided to install Librerator for reading pdf files. I must stress that I prefer Duokan over Librerator, but for the time being, I'm left with no other options.

You can try using Kubrick to restore your Kindle to 3.4, if you really really prefer Duokan.


But hopefully one of these days Duokan will open up and work with the community. Then, perhaps, their offerings can benefit from recent advancements made outside their own camp.

Eschwartz, I can't thank you enough for saving me from misery I used Kubrick to downgrade firmware to 3.4. It took almost three hours only to flash the firmware and next 2 hours to reset to factory defaults, install Duokan 2015, jailbreak device, install back door lock, copy books back into folders, fonts, screen savers and dictionaries. If we lived on the same continent, I'd buy you a lunch Thanks a lot!
