It is a joy to know that Terry Pratchett is still alive and doing well.
I'm in the midst of reading the Discworld novels right now, and with every page turn, I become a bigger fan of his work.

Let's hope the effects of Alzheimers don't hit him any harder for a good long while so he can both carry on writing and doing the work he's doing in raising awareness for the condition.

There was a point that I really didn't like the man as he got rather snotty over a fanzine I was involved in (this will be about 15-20 years ago now), but I decided I liked his writing too much to not read any more. And as far as I know things are now amicable between said fanzine and Sir P (I stopped being involved quite some while ago...)

I'm not sure if you're being serious or not, Bob, but the British "honours" system is a public recognition of people who have done "good things" for the country. The "system" as a whole is called the "Order of the British Empire" (yes, I know it's archaic, but that's the way it is) and there are five "levels" of award, which are, from lowest to highest:

Member (MBE)
Officer (OBE)
Commander (CBE)
Knight Commander (KBE) / Dame Commander (DBE)
Knight Grand Cross (GBE) / Dame Grand Cross (GBE)

The two highest levels are "knighthoods" and entitle the bearer to add the title "Sir" for a man, or "Dame" for a woman.

Terry Pratchett has been awarded a KBE, so he will be correctly addressed as "Sir Terry" while his wife will be "Lady Pratchett".

don't you have any kind of honours in the US ? here we have things like the "Légion d'Honneur" which are awarded by the president. there are actually a number of different honours. some are based on specific kinds of acheivements like cultural contributions. the mother of one of my ex-boyfriends was awarded the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres for her outstanding work as the Curator of the Art and History Museum of St. Denis.

None that are so prominent that they bestow some type of royalty like title to a person. I guess there is the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Congressional Medal of Honor which is for military service and the Congressional Gold Medal for civilians.

ha okay. the honours here are pretty prestigious usually, occasionally someone will refuse to recieve it to protest the government or something and it makes a huge fuss. you get a medal and a little coloured ribbon (each award has its own specific colors) to wear on your buttonhole. one of the grades is "Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur" which translates as "Knight of the Legion of Honor," although we don't have a monarchy in france (though the award was created by Napoléon Bonaparte, so...).
