everybody should have a comfy chair to read in. a fireplace is pretty nice too (i wish i had one of those... luckily i have friends who do. i'm going to see one of them on friday and i asked her if we could have a fire, she said we could if i would make it.

Marks and Spencers had a lovely love seat that would make an ideal reading chair for one person

Okay, what exactly is a love seat? Doesn´t sound like something you read on, ahem, and my online dictionary refuses to translate it

It's either a very cozy two seater sofa (cozy enough that if you're not built like a stick insect you have to really like the other person to sit with them on it), or a very large arm chair.

Personally I think they make very good armchairs. Sofas are far better for cuddling up to some-one on...

I see. Thanks for the explanation. We would call it a "sofa for two" (roughly translated), German is that unromantic!

Furniture often have strange names. I remember when a chesterfield used to be a cigarette.

Chesterfield is also known as a couch or sofa, and also an Amerian Ciggy.

We used the word chesterfield when we were young, seldom used now except by my mum.

Some definitions of Chesterfield, the cigarette is plural Chesterfields
1. Canada Northwestern US sofa: a large sofa with upright armrests at the same height as the back, usually upholstered in leather and with a rolled-over outward curve along the top
2. UK Canada couch: an upholstered couch or sofa with back and arms of the same height
