A lot of the focus on the WSJ report is on the layoffs and very little on the new products rumored to be in the pipeline.

The Motley Fool of all places is focusing on the latter:

Bad news: no mention of Liquavista
Sort-of interesting news: they've been toying with a kindle with two year time between charges. Could come in handy come the asteroid impact.

Micro-nuke battery cells. We need them. Your Kindle's battery would outlast your descendants.

I think Bethesda Softworks has a patent on those.

And Apple just filed a patent for laptops powered by fuel cells.
Toshiba, I think, had a prototype for an alcohol fuel cell tablet some years back; perfect for survivalists and moonshiners.

Amazon is probably counting on the emergence of nanocarbon bateries at 10x better capacity or the Gigafactory dropping prices by the same ratio.

Only one of the many patents given out for them, then.

If memory serves me correctly, the reason stated at the time the logo was changed (which was with the release of the PW2) was that "Amazon" was a much more recognised brand than "Kindle" in places like India, which was the country Amazon saw as its largest untapped market.

I cringe every time someone says how do I publish on kindle.
I really cringe when they ask how do I publish at both Amazon and Kindle.
I get some people don't know the difference. I expect/hope that someone that wants to publish a book will know how to read and what company puts out a kindle.

It is called the "Kindle Digital Publishing" (KDP) platform, so that's not actually too bad a question for someone to ask .

Harry,
That is more the phrasing and if one is not careful, it is super easy to create an author account. I am so glad the password screen popped up or I would have created an author account when I was looking something up.

No matter what exactly the reason is, I think it was a good decicion. "Kindle" has grown to be accepted as the name for reading only devices. That is why it was a bit confusing that the fire tablet was called Kindle Fire. I welcome the change (around the same time IIRC) from Kindle Fire to Fire tablet. It is less confusing - Kindle is for ebooks. The Kindle is dedicated ereader. If you want ebooks on a multifunction device (e.g. Fire tablet) you will need the Kindle app. Books are bought from Amazon, including ebooks for the Kindle and Kindle app. All is less confusing now. Wouldn't you agree?

I don't really care why Amazon claims they did it, and maybe it was for foreign markets. But even in the US it is better now, IMHO.

Kindle has become a generic use name for e-reader (by the masses), similar to that of Kleenex has become for 'Facial tissue'

I dislike obvious branding and logos on my stuff - I am not an advertising board - anything I deem too prominent just gets covered up

The first thing I do when buying an automobile is peel the dealers sticker off the back of the car. I bought one once that did not have a sticker. As I came outside, they had just put one on. They were not pleased when I peeled it off.

Last time we bought a car, the dealership asked if they could put their label on the car.
