"C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe PS I am not 100% that K for PC updated without asking, I think it did but it is conceivable that it asked, I said OK, & then I forgot I'd done that. I recall there was a time 2 or 3 of years back, when I was running an older version of K for PC and not wanting it to update, but for the life of me I cannot remember why! Eventually I had to allow it as they build in expiry dates, after which the older versions no longer work. |

K4PC does silently update if you tell it to, just as Firefox does.

i just launched it to look for any such option and it ran an automatic update! but yes you are correct - options - general - update without asking....ticked so that explains things for me anyway. so I now have 1.12.2. 40996 - last updated today - Strange, I am sure that's the version I already had... scrolls thread to check previous posting - yep ??? |

Lots and lots and lots of programs install in AppData. I consider it good manners for a program to offer the option.

You will find those programs also (usually) offer the option to do an administrative install into C:\Program Files\ Would you believe that Chrome/Firefox offering AppData installs was actually considered to be an important feature? By developers and users? At least one place where this is a good idea -- how else do people install a decent browser on a corporate PC? http://PortableApps.com -- useful as a last resort, but often overkill. ... Checking my WINE install, Kindle for PC is installed in the pseudo-Program Files folder, not the pseudo-AppData folder. What are the chances that you inadvertently told Kindle for PC to install locally rather than globally? Last edited by eschwartz; 08-31-2015 at 12:05 PM. |

I think a debate of installing/not installing to app data is drifting off topic. it is well covered elsewhere e.g. here.

http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1...les-vs-appdata it came up here only because some one suggested a possible link between where it installs and whether it needs to ask a users permission to update. maybe a shared Pc has multiple appdata installs of K for PC for multiple users, and even different versions co-existing ? dunno & don't much care as I am single user. at one time I think I had two or more older versions left behind in multiple locations, I recall having to clear them all out when I was having sync & download issues for most Kindle users, all that really matter is " where does it put the books" : answer: in My documents and each user has their own copy of that folder. |

It does, however, have continued relevance for that explicit purpose, i.e. where do you have it installed, and can you change that.

Where it stores books may have general relevance, but unfortunately it has very little relevance to this thread, which is about a new version of the DRM tools and tangentially about programs, i.e. K4PC, obsoleting the current tools via updated versions which may or may not be automatically installed. |

AppData is an install location for applications that do NOT require administrative privlileges to install (or update) and that are _user specific_. Applications that are installed in AppData are not available to any other users on the computer. And guess what, not every computer is a single user machine!

However, that being said, many corporate policies block any application that attempts to install there. It is the preferred location for certain malware types. |

I was asked for permission first and agreed. I kind of wish I hadn't now if we are going to be stuck with KFX.

I really wouldn't worry about that. There's no immediate prospect of being "stuck" with KFX.

I have the latest Kindle for PC (1.12.2 40996) installed and have tested with three books, all of which are KFX on my PW2. They all were delivered in the older format, compatible with calibre and the "tools", using Kindle for PC.

I think that whoever stated that K4PC uses KFX was mistaken. |

I'm not aware of anyone getting a KFX file from K4PC, although it's entirely reasonable to suppose it will start delivering them at some future update, just as happened with the KF8 format.

I just went back to a previous version K4PC because I don't trust the current version not accept eBooks that won't have problems with DRM and/or converting.

Really no point in doing that. Old versions of K4PC stop working after a certain period of time.
