How to block indent a paragraph? Center a seperator?

I love Calibre Editor, but I'm not very good at some of this specialty stuff. Can someone tell me, step by step, how to block indent a paragraph? This is used, for instance, when someone is reading a letter - to indicate that this is the letter text.

I'm not picky, even if just the entire left side is indented is enough. Doing it line by line just screws it up depending on the ereader and size of type.

Another thing is how to center stars to indicate a change to a new location. For example, centering the stars that separate text.

Put <blockquote>...</blockquote> around the letter, and style the blockquote however you wish, e.g. "margin:1em".

As for centered stars, use a style with "text-align:center" for the para.

The Wiki entry for how to format a letter (while not wrong) is not the best way to do it. The best way to do it is using a <blockquote>.

Thanks all! I used <blockquote> </blockquote> and that worked perfectly.

From http://www.w3.org, I found a centering technique.
For center allignment, I used:
<DIV align="Center">
<P>...text in first paragraph...
<P>...text in second paragraph...
<P>...text in third paragraph...
</DIV>

I am trying to learn how to use the style sheets, but it's not really coming together. Spending hours on it and no further ahead. That's why I use Calibre instead of Sigil in the first place.

In this, they are no different. HTML/CSS has the same rules

You need to remember to link the stylesheets to the pages

Same In both: Select (1 or more) section files: Right click: Link stylesheets: Select sheets to use (Note any previous linked sheets on those files will be unlinked.

For your scene breaks with the nook use this:

<div class="sb">***</div>

in your css add this:

.sb {
  display: block;
  margin-bottom: 8px;
  margin-left: 0;
  margin-right: 0;
  margin-top: 0;
  text-align: center;
  text-indent: 0;
}

With the nook you need to tell it text-indent: 0 in the css or it will add an indent.

Note you can use any name you wish I just used sb as an example, also you can adjust the top and bottom margins to your preference.

Not just for nook as this works in all ePub. If you prefer to use asterisks still use a space between them.

margin-bottom: .8em;
text-indent: 0
}

You need to add top space AND bottom space. Also, keep the CSS minimized. Don't put in unnecessary code. All those margins with a value of 0 don't normally need to be there and you don't need the display: block. Plus, don't use absolute spacing such as px. em is best to use.

Nook has a bug in it, to you have to put code in the css to work around it. You need all of those margins in nook plus the text-indent. Read and you will see that I was talking about the nook.

And everybody does not have your preferences on scene breaks.

It's best to keep things XHTML-compliant, which means use lowercase for tags (<div> and <p>, not <DIV> or <P>) and close all tags properly (so <p> needs a closing </p>). Tags like <br> and <hr> with no content should either be written <br></br> and <hr></hr>, or (better) <br/> and <hr/>.

IIRC, "align" attributes are deprecated these days, so it's better to use <div class="centered"> and then have a CSS rule:

.centered { text-align: center; }

...and then you can also add any other formatting you want for "centered" divs inside the braces {...}
