Good morning, everyone! It's going to be a bright and sunny Friday, and I'm getting ready to be wined and dinned ... er... juiced and breakfasted... by a video advertising company who wants my input about locations up north along the border. I guess our last motorcycle ride is gonna pay for itself! They want to use a drone shooting video over tea plantations and hill tribe villages, exactly what we were seeing on our last ride! So it's breakie in one of Chiang Mai's 5-star hotels. Should be a massive buffet. I'm going to wear my pants with the elastic waistband...

But... just in case they wrote their own 5-star rating (not unheard of in Thailand,) I'm drinking Viang Joom On's "English Breakfast" tea here at home to be sure I've gotten my tea fix settled before I head to the hotel.

Every once in a while you wrestle with technology, and you win. Or, perhaps, it lets you think that you've won.

Either way, just a few drops of Shiraz left in my glass, contributing to a warm glow of victory.

Ah, savor the moment, and the Shiraz. Both will be fleeting, one suspects. IME, technology likes to give you a false sense of superiority before it smacks you in the side of the head. But a good Shiraz lingers on the palate.

Hotel orange juice and coffee this morning. But this is a Fairmont, so both are actually good.

Time for a glass of Bombay Sapphire on the rocks, a bowl of popcorn, and a good movie. Tonight's main feature; Kurasawa's "Seven Samurai!"

Honestly, I have no idea what I did right, but prior to two days ago it was dead as a doornail, and so far it has been working perfectly. And I'm reluctant to look too deeply into this gift horse's mouth!

Besides, as of five minutes ago, the Shiraz is gone.

Ah, but if it's a good Shiraz, you'll have the memory of it forever. I still know the taste of a 1996 Penfold's Grange I drank 5 years ago. And of a completely unexpected Syrah from Burrowing Owl that I had several years ago. Of course, there are way more Shiraz that I have no memory of at all. And that's probably just as well.

A glass of fresh squeezed orange juice. Nearing the end of the California Navel season, I think, but these are still good.

Good morning, all. The storm came early. Sunday morning rains... Maybe a day at home today. Hunker down with a good book and a pot of tea... Tea starting with Taylors of Harrogate's "Yorkshire" tea, beside a plate of hummus, Kalamata olives, and babbaganoush. Chick peas, olives, and eggplant... a good way to start the day!



I have a close friend who can only eat Western breakfasts. Nothing else will do. He can eat foods from most other countries for lunch or dinner, but breakfast has to be bacon and fried eggs, pancakes and scrambled eggs, waffles with syrup and sausages, etc. He'd rather just not eat if he can't start his day that way.

He came to Japan to visit me a few years ago, and we traveled a bit. We stayed one night at a small traditional Japanese inn located in a very rural part of Honshu, but the owner could speak a bit of English. He asked my friend if he would prefer a Japanese breakfast or Western, and of course my friend said bacon and eggs would be fine. Usually breakfasts are served communal style in Japanese Inns, as 'set menu' meals. My friend was surprised to discover the next morning that his bacon (Japanese bacon, unsmoked) and his fried eggs had been cooked the night before so as not to disrupt the kitchen's morning preparation of the Japanese set menu. Cold tasteless bacon and cold greasy eggs... served by the smiling wife of the Inn's owner who was absolutely delighted that she could provide a nice Western meal to her foreigner guest!

I'm going to have another cup of tea. Yorkshire tea is really hearty!
