The purpose of language is to communicate. English didn't have a standard spelling until the 1800's (arguably up through the 1900's), but somehow we managed to communicate. There are six known surviving signatures written by Shakespeare. None of them are spelled the same including three on the same document (his will).

When I am writing a quick post on a web board during a work break, I'm not going to take the time to look up the spelling or usage of a word, unless I think that I need to in order to get my point across. If I'm writing for work, then I check.
