The "File Manager" in a reading program is there primarily to provide for navigating through the file structure you created for your ebook library. Creating and maintaining the library file structure is best done on your PC with all the tools available there. Many use calibre, on their PC, to create their library and send the files to their device.

Which is why I didn't realize that KOReader had some file management functionality until I started poking around this morning. That said, since the functionality does exist and Xen did bring it up, why not correct myself?

It also depends upon how a person uses their ereader. I noticed that PBChess included a notepad and calculator, so clearly someone thinks that adding a few simple functions to an ereader has some value. Since I use mine as a reader and only a reader, it's not something that I'm interested in -- yet people who are interested in it may want such information.

Right, it can be easy to forget that. While I suspect that most of us are just reading for enjoyment, there are plenty of students and others where additional related tools could come in handy.

I should also point out that to make use of the File Manager's functions with files maintained on the external uSD card, it must be remounted as Read/Write. For some reason Kobo mounts the external SD card as Read Only. It is easy to add a line to remount it as read/write, to the script that launches Koreader.

#remount SD card as read/write
mount -o remount,rw /mnt/sd

Interesting. Does the Kobo remount the card as read/write when it connected to a computer (i.e. switches to USB mass storage support)? I guess it makes some sense though, since it only modifies files in the onboard uSD card.

Good question! Calibre gives you the option to move things to device main memory or an SD card. I can't see how that would work very well if its been mounted read only!

The USB connection as mass media devices mounts, correction presents, the user partition and the external uSD card as read write.

I'm still struggling with some oddness on this device. Is it possible it one of the modified version of firmware could fix some of this? If I load modified firmware, does it void any warranty?

The add-on/alternative readers do not modify the firmware. The launchers do make a tiny addition to the startup code of the firmware. There are "patches" and mods to Nickel that do probably make modifications to the stock software included in the firmware, that being their purpose after all. But - a "factory reset" or firmware "update" would return the device to stock firmware.

Here's what's been going on since the self-reboot from scratch:

• I have it set up to page forward with a touch at the bottom and backward with a touch at the top; touching in the middle is supposed to bring up the menu. What actually happens is that it will occasionally go BACK a page when it should go forward, and middle touches will usually page instead of bringing up the menu
• The touch screen is often non-responsive. Sometimes I have to touch 5 or 6 times before it will respond
• Page turns are noticeably slow.
• Loading a book is even slower - much slower than my old Kindle Keyboard.

You can specify the responses to touchscreen events, in the alternative readers also. If the issues you are experiencing are related to the software that responds to the touchscreen events, you could see a difference using the alternative readers - If you have an issue with the hardware performance of the H2O's touchscreen, the alternative readers might have better error handling, but it is likely you would still see some similar performance.

Might an alternate reader solve some of the problems with the slow loading and slow page turns?

It might, depending on the cause of the problem. On my AuraHD the current versions of Koreader seem quick enough.

The thing that concerns me is the funky touch screen. I HATE touch screens to start with - buttons are much easier to use, much less fragile, and more precise IMO, but as far as I can tell all the devices have become touch-screen operated. But, it seems like there is something wrong with this one, not picking up touches or interpreting them incorrectly somehow.

Or is what I describe par for the course?

You should have nothing to lose giving the alternative readers a try.

I guess the OS of your computer does not care how and whether what it accesses as external usb storage is mounted by the kobo reader, actually it is umounted.
BTW: you can remount the sd as ro or rw in KSM (tools > external sd.msh).
