New version of DRM removal tools ("DeDRM")

I don't think making changes to your account is the actual (or maybe I should say only) trigger for being updated to the "New" encryption method. I think it just happens now. Like a staggered rollout of a software update.

I've done absolutely nothing to my B&N account in months. Everything worked fine (old encryption key) at that time. Yesterday I re-downloaded one of my previous purchases and—bam!—the lock had been changed.

I'd already decided a while back not to buy from them any more; I just wanted to see if the old way still worked for me. It doesn't.

Your post made me go and try to download a previously purchased book and same thing happened for me, can't remove the DRM. Fortunately I backup all my books so I'll never have to re-download any of them. And like you, I decided awhile ago to purchase elsewhere when this thread first started about not being able to remove the DRM.

Edit: Oh I finally got it to work with a new key! So my option to purchase from them is still open for now if they're ever the cheaper choice, but they'll be a last resort.

I have been asked to detail the differences between obok 3.1.1 and my version 3.1.2. They are very minor.

1) Coding (UTF-8) and version number added to obok.py (which was still labelled at obok 3.0.5), although I see now that I managed to set __version__ to 3.1.1, not 3.1.2. I also added a version announcement to the Kobo Library init.
2) Plugin version number updated to 3.1.2
3) Updated the version number in the Help file.

And I now realise that I should have added 3.1.1 (unzipped) to my repository, so that the changes would have been obvious.

I'll see if I can fix that.

Now fixed. I've just pushed two new commits to my github repository of the tools. One adding the 3.1.1 unzipped plugin, and one with the 3.1.2 unzipped plugin (although I've deleted the MACOSX folder that accidentally got left in).

Ok, at this point even if B&N is the only one who has the book, I will never purchase from them again. I bought "The Nutcracker" a few years ago and after having to chat with B&N just to find out how to open the book, I had to also install Nook Study at the time. It's a PagePerfect book, which is a DRM'd PDF. DRM can't be removed (I even posted at Alf's about it thinking I had to just not be doing it correctly).

When I contacted B&N this morning, they said there's nothing they can do, I have to contact Yuzu. A few emails back and forth with Yuzu today verified there's no way they can transfer the book since it's not an etextbook. I contact B&N chat again demanding a refund this time since I no longer have any way to read they book and got it. And at least the delay with this rep wasn't like they were chatting with a dozen other customers at the same time like this morning.

The book wasn't much, but it's the principle and letting B&N know just how unhappy I am with their changes lately. Never again.

Just so I'm clear, is it that this book no longer opens in NookStudy or you no longer have NookStudy and BN/Yuzu has taken down the download link, so there's no way to re-install it to read your book?

Either way, it's totally unacceptable. I'm just wondering how far they're going to squash NookStudy.

I just downloaded 5 recently purchased free eBooks with NookStudy and using 6.2.0 of the DRM plugin, I was able to remove the DRM no problem.

New computer setup and there's no link to download Nook Study anywhere. I'm sure it will install if they'd just give a download link for it. I often save downloaded installation files and put them on a DVD to make setting up easier, but only in the case of programs I think might be hard to find again. I'll have to dig around and see if maybe Nook Study didn't get backed up accidentally, it's not something I'd normally have been worried not being able to download later when needed. Or dig around my WinXP machine and pull out registry entries for it and see if I can't get it copied over and working that way after importing the registry entries.

It does look like they've removed the NOOK Study download link from Yuzu.

I'm convinced it's just a matter of no one working on it. If you have an older copy of the PagePerfect Nookbook with cc-based encryption, you can open it in Adobe Digital Editions 2.0 by entering name and cc number (if you still know the correct info, of course). Or any app that supports pdfs and B&N's DRM. You can also sideload them to Nook for PC by going to "my stuff" and clicking the Add New Item button (this should work with new copies too).

That being said, I applaud not buying from B&N anymore. And I may see if I can get a refund on the one non-freebie PagePerfect book that I bought.

I just tried it in Adobe 3.0 (which is what I have installed before hunting down 2) with the old original downloaded book and that actually worked to open the file with the old cancelled card it was purchased on. I could always load the book in Nook for PC after entering that info, but it doesn't display properly. Oddly it displays the first 9 pages of the book perfectly. And the rest of the pages are blank except for the footer with the page number and alternating author/title. Then the "About the Authors" on page 226 appears just fine and the last 2 pages after that which are really just a solid color page and the back cover. I haven't tried it on a newly downloaded book with the new encryption.
*Edit: Actually the footers as well are completely gone starting with page 96, so it's totally blank pages until 226. And opening it in ADE turns out to be a pain, every time you open the book you need to re-enter the name and cc number, even if you close the book but not ADE you need to re-enter the info.

When I originally posted at Alf's about it, they said they haven't been able to remove the DRM from those PagePerfect books and it sounded like they really have tried in the past.

As far as I know, Sony's ebook DRM (the LRF not epub version) was never cracked either, but like B&N, I suspect it was more because not that many people were all that interested in it than because it was uncrackable.
