Backing up a PaperWhite

I looked for but didn't see any listings covering this topic so I'm throwing it out here.
Who is backing up and how? Can a simple "dd" do the trick? Is TWRP available for the PW?

What exactly do you want to backup?

User content? -> /mnt/us
Settings? -> /var/local
Hacks? -> Slightly more complex, I'd forget about it ^^.

I'd go the old fashioned way: rsync or tarballs; dd feels a bit overkill, and there might be some inherent quirks tin the way the userstore is handled, so, meh.

Right now I keep a sideloaded copy of the entire "sdcard" files (via USB) on an external HD but these of course would not restore all the root files. Are we sure that the "dd" route is to iffy to trust? I used it a couple of centuries ago on my SimpleTouch with great success.

For a PW2?
The Amazon release files are complete images - less user store, /var/local and the personal / device specific stuff stored outside of the filesystem.

Yup, don't need a copy of the rootfs, Amazon gives to us (vanilla, at least).

And USBMS is handled in a very particular way by Amazon, your experience with other device doesn't apply here .

I just use rsync, with some excludes for various useless junk (you might want to edit these as you see fit):

Also, MobileRead package installer can make it easier for you to mass reinstall useful hacks.
