How good is resulting MOBI file when converting from ePub?

Dear Calibre users,

I'm considering buying an Amazon Kindle. Many of my books are in ePub (DRM free). I understand that Kindle doesn't read ePub files, so converting to a format it understands, such as Mobi, is necessary.

How faithful to the original ePub would the Kindle-readable file be? Is there some formatting lost?

If you get a relatively recent-model Kindle, you will be able to make use of the KF8 (azw3) format. Depending on the conversion settings chosen (and how the original EPUB was constructed), EPUB to KF8 should be fairly lossless as far as formatting is concerned.

EPUB is the preferred source for generating Kindlebooks these days, afterall.

If you Side load, use AZW3 and set your Kindle to use publishers styles
All that is lost is page Margins can't be rendered as 0 (there is a temporary-fragile hack to override words per line: setting. I use 10, the default is 40)
