Glo Stopping f/w update

The answer may be buried in the depths of MR but I haven't been able to locate it.

I have a Glo with F/W 2.81 and don't want it to update automatically (or even at all). Up till now I have simply "quarantined" it by not allowing it to connect to the Internet, however I would like to be able to do so in order to download dictionaries without having to manually sideload them, and to be able to use the "browser".

I'm sure I saw someone mention that there was a way of doing this, but didn't point to the "how".

Details would be most welcome or a pointer to how to do it.

You'll need to block the reader from accessing the update servers by editing the hosts file.

One way to do it is to use the Kobo Desktop to download your dictionaries, and before you eject, delete the three upgrade files from .kobo.

You might consider trying the "Block WiFi firmware upgrade" patch of GeoffR's patches.

For the dictionaries you'll have to follow the suggestions above. The browser you should be OK using as the firmware should only try to update on SYNC, not just with an internet connection.

(Side note; I believe patches were there for 2.8.1, based on the original Russian forum)

I have some doubts whether these patches contained already the patch under discussion. In addition there were two versions of 2.8.1 if I remember correctly. This might also cause troubles.

In later f/w versions the affiliate setting in the config file is used to (apparently) stagger the f/w release around the world.

What would happen if you put in some completely bogus affiliate name?

Currently bogus affiliate delivers 3.1.0 for Glo.

So use a real bogus affiliate. I think the first to load is usually Chapters or Indigo in Canada. I could be wrong. Australia is amongst the last to load.

Shouldn't be too difficult for the wiz...

I did test with several "real" bogus affiliates too. The result for Glo was always 3.1.0 or higher. To be more precise, all I tested deliverd 3.12.1, with the exception of RakutenBooks and RakutenIchiba.

Because 2.81 is the last version that had the facility to show your reading progress within a book as a graph and would give you an estimate of how long to finish the current chapter.

Thanks to all who made suggestions - hacking the hosts file seemed a good approach (I've used similar on Android based systems to suppress ads) but it looks like actually getting access to the file is not straightforward.

I'll probably use the "Desktop and delete" method to get the dictionaries uploaded.
