If you send a book, it will still be a book -- unless you mean these ones don't have the Personal banner? That would be interesting... I would also like to know how you know these won't incur a charge when downloading over 3G. Have you tried downloading one over 3G?

Is there a good, stable freeware program for scanners that does the same job of scanning personal books? I have a scanner (though not connected at present) and the software that came with it but if there is a good freeware that can scan it into a textfile for me to convert in Calibre that would be very useful to me with all my paper books.

Scan it into high-quality image files, then ask what is the best stable freeware OCR program. Tesseract is supposed to be the best open-source OCR engine, and it powers various frontends. But according to the experts here, ABBYY Finereader is well worth the money in terms of timesaving reliability. |

Does this, by any chance, produce Topaz format ebooks?

I don't know... A program that you could start, scan page by page, and have it create an e-book without any more effort than pushing a button for each page would be worth about $19. Since I can't actually imagine this happening without a lot of editing, I can't see it being worth much more than zero...

for me, the time (where time = money) it takes to scan in an entire book costs much more than the purchase price of the ebook version. if i wanted the ebook version bad enough, i would just buy the ebook and donate the paper book.

And if there is no ebook version? That is why people say ABBYY Finereader is worth the money. |

I really don't think anybody is going to be scanning paper books where an ebook already exists. But I have about 500 books I can't buy as ebooks (and my collection isn't that big...)

Exactly. I have a handful of battered old titles that simply aren't available in print, much less digital. (ACE DOUBLES, for example.) They mean enough to *me* to spend an hour scanning and sic'ing OmniScan on it to produce a private edition for me to reread. Not something I'd do for just any book, though. |

**UPDATED** I was totally incorrect. This software DOES place the files in the DOCS section not ebooks. this software is way less useful use calibre... Last edited by zebradude; 02-05-2015 at 04:19 PM.
