author name beginning with 'Van'or 'Von" or 'de"
Is it possible to sort author names like Von Braun under V and De Beers under D. Calibre puts the von, van,de etc. at the end of the name to sort.
Thanks, |

@Lapsie - you can 'fix' the Author Sort value in Manage Authors - right click author name in Book Details (where cover is shown) or in the Tag Browser & select Manage Authors. Press F2 on an Author Sort value and edit.

Seems to be controlled HERE but it isn't configurable.Unlike for example the tweak "per_language_title_sort_articles" |

I think the OP wants to change "Merwe, Carel van der" in Author Sort to "van der Merwe, Carel" Note the lack of capitalisation, I think that's how an Afrikaaner would write it, the Dutch and/or Flemish may capitalise the 'van der', not sure. Note that I moved two tokens. If it was "John, James Alfred St" I would want " St John, James Alfred". Here I move one token. BR Last edited by BetterRed; 12-23-2014 at 02:43 AM. |

I just did a cursory search for "von" and that's all I found.
Didn't actually try to figure out what it does.... and now I look a little more and am entirely confused as to how this is supposed to work, but I could swear calibre had something to stick van/von/de/stuff lastname prefixes to the lastname... And now I am thinking way too much about foreign languages so my head hurts.

There have been many threads over the years about how to deal with more complex names. One of the more recent was https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=230705. One from 2012 is https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=164772

No, we don't capitalise them either. And 'Carel van der Merwe' would indeed be sorted as 'Merwe, Carel van der' (i.e. on M) normally.

If Carel played cricket for South Afica, then commentators would say "Magnificent hook for six over square leg by van der Merwe" not "Magnific... by Merwe", an Aussie listener would wonder, "Merv who... Hughes?" Similarly a teacher in UK or Aus and I suspect in an English language school in SA might ask "van der Merwe, what is the square root of 81" not "Merwe, wha... 81", otherwise Merv Hughes might chime in with 42 ![]() Many (most) people want their books sorted on how they would "say the authors family name" - that's why its best left to the user. It's their ... library, not the Union of Librarians library or the Tax Commissioners archive ![]() Quote:
