I rotate genres so I don't get overloaded in one genre. Like History, then Mystery, then Historical Mystery, and mix in Biography Present or Historical. This works for me, especially since I like to read series of the authors I like. If I read too many in a series I'll get overloaded, and enjoy them each more when I space them out.

I had the same problem for quite some time. First, I listed them according to author. In other words, I created folders (using my Windows PC) with the authors' names and moved (cut and pasted) the ebooks into the appropriate folders. Then I created categories (according to genres) and placed the folders into the appropriate categories. A few examples of categories follow:

Crime eBooks
Educational eBooks
Fantasy eBooks
Historical Fiction eBooks
Historical Nonfiction eBooks
Informational eBooks
Mystery eBooks
Nonfiction eBooks
Novel eBooks
Sci-Fi eBooks
Self-Help eBooks
Spy Novel eBooks
Young Adult eBooks

That solved one problem--they were organized now. The second problem--what did I want to read? I was mostly interested in Young Adult (YA) ebooks, so I began reading YA novels because I truly enjoyed them... as much as one can enjoy dystopian novels. >.>

Now I'm also interested in Informational and Self-Help ebooks so I'm reading from those categories, as well.

If I never read a majority of my ebooks, it's okay. I only have this lifetime... There's only so much I could read. I'm just thankful I have options. There were lots of times when I had very few options... or no options at all. I didn't even own an ereader! So, I try to be thankful for what I have. *nods*

I don't think the number of books is a problem in itself: I would love to have 5000 good, carefully chosen books that I want to read loaded on my ereader. But it would take me many hundreds of hours, maybe thousands of hours, of research to select those 5000 books.

But if I had 5000 books that I hadn't selected carefully, then the first thing I would do would be delete them all and only reload the ones I really wanted to read. It takes me 8-12 hours to read most books, so I think it is worth spending 20-30 minutes per book researching to find one worth reading (and another 5-10 minutes fixing publishing mistakes to make the reading experience a better one).

If the choice of books is not the problem, then maybe it would help to get away from the other distractions. I walk the local bush tracks, or take a trip to a national park. But sometimes I don't do a lot of actual walking, I just find a nice spot to to settle in and read. No WiFi, often not even cellphone coverage (not that I take my cellphone).

One of my best reading experiences ever was being snowed in for two days in a shelter by myself on Mt Egmont, it was before I got my ereader but I had brought Warren Norwood's The Windhover Tapes and someone else had left a copy of Wilbur Smith's The Diamond Hunters in the shelter. If I didn't have the books it would have been an awful boring two days, but with them it turned out to be one of the best parts of the trip.

Set aside a time for just reading and stick to it. Leave your home and read in a library or coffee shop.

Apache: that is so wise!

I seriously do have a problem of finding so many books to be badly written. For decades I've enjoyed science-fiction as recreation. I now find it frustrating, as so much of it is so badly written. I find myself thinking about how sentences should be better constructed, and how the dialogue is stilted and unconvincing.

Translations are also a problem for the same reasons.

It is an ongoing problem for me to decide what to read next. Too many books, too little time.

Sometimes I read one book at a time and other times I read several concurrently. I switch more often when I am feeling stressed. Lower concentration span I think.

I have many of the books I want to read marked in calibre and these are what I put on my readers.

I have little problem choosing a book, but it annoys me unreasonably when I choose one that doesn't suit my mood. Spoiled brat I guess.

I always have at least three books going at one time, one of which is an audiobook. I know that I will not live long enough to read all the printed books currently in my house, much less the larger number of electronic books that I own.

When it's time to select a new book, I consult my lists -- first looking at the review books and the dates that the reviews are due. Since I am actively reading a couple of books at one time, I simply switch books if I temporarily lose interest or I'm not in a mood for a particular story at that time.
