I just "bought" a free ebook from B&N with my dead card that's still listed on the site and the purchase went through. So I'm curious what will happen after the expiration date of that dead card passes, if there's any check against the card at all for freebies. I've got about 8 months to go through before I can test that out

. I'll probably forget all about it by then.

That's good to know. I guess it makes sense now that the DRM is no longer keyed to your credit card.

Maybe somebody with a card that expires sooner will let us know about that. I know Google Play won't let you get freebies with an expired card.

As far as I can tell, there's no check for free books. At one time, I had entered my card with the wrong expiration date. I didn't realize it until I tried to pay for a book and the charge didn't go through, but I had a bunch of free books in the meantime that all worked.

I 'bought' a free book from B&N Oct 31. When I checked the file it did not have the usual .epub extension and I could not get the book to open. My credit card was expired so I updated it. I had 'bought' free books in the past with this outdated credit card with no problem.

The book would not open in Calibre. Gave me the message that it was DRM protected. I had to go into the plugin and reenter my credit card info even though the only thing that changed was the expiration date, the name and number were the same. After I updated the plugin I was able to open the book in Calibre.

Since you purchased the book, can't you just log in and download it again? I'm thinking maybe something got screwed up on the initial download.

No. It would download in the correct format now since I updated my Credit Card. It only happened before I updated my Credit Card. I then had to update the Credit Card info in the Calibre plugin for Alf to work.

Sometimes there will be a version number, like this:

booktitle_isbn.v2.epub

I thought it used to check the card with a 1 cent hold just to make sure the drm was linked to a valid account. But maybe not or maybe they stopped.

I'm curious if accounts which are no longer on the cc based social drm can now get freebies or use a gift card without a default cc.
