Audible Badges and Gamification
I'm not sure of the state of Audible on other platforms, but a recent update for Android has added a whole section for video-game style badges and stats. It seems a little absurd to me. Have you seen it yet? What do you think?

They have to keep up with the gaming consoles: they introduced achievements for apps last year, I think.
On the consoles it's a way to prod "achievement whores" to try out the video apps.
Amazon's Freetime (for kids) has been handing out achievement badges on Kindles for a while.

Anything that gets people to read or listen to books is hardly bad. And if giving out attaboys helps...

I got a badge the other day, and was totally baffled. I had both the Scribd and Audible apps open on my Android phone, browsing, and wasn't even sure which one the badge came from. I've used the phone to listen to Audible only a couple of times when my Clip Zip needed charging, hardly worthy of a badge. Don't know where it disappeared to after I closed the app.

They've been doing them on iOS for years now.

I don't like how it's limited to your install. You delete the app, you lose your badges.

The Android app got a bit of a UI refresh, too, which is a minor improvement. The only practical change I've found so far is they pulled the sleep timer out of the menus and gave it a dedicated button, which is good. It still has the limited intervals, so I can't set it for my preferred 45min, just 15, 30, or an hour.

With the latest Android update, it's saved in the cloud so your badges are immortal. Note that there are 3 levels of badges to achieve. The iOS app must be saving some usage data there as well, because I would not have achieved Master status with the Android app without all the hours I put in on my iPod Touch. I would guess the iOS app will get this very soon.

I have to say, I do like seeing how much time I spend with audiobooks, and wouldn't mind seeing similar statistics for ebooks.
