Still, it seems to me that a person should be able to buy an ereader device and side load from sites like this one or Gutenberg without whipping out a credit card to start an account with a store they won't use.

No need to add a credit card to your Kobo account when you set it up/use it to set up/upgrade your device. Some people make up a fictitious e-mail account or use a throw away one.

So no, that's not an unreasonable expectation

They don't, obviously. That is rather the point.

Note that one can still buy Amazon books without a Kindle.

I do it. But you need an app if you don't have a Kindle. You need something.

True. Although technically Amazon will let you anyway, after first asking "Are you sure? You don't have a Kindle or Kindle app or anything".

Actually you don't. Amazon let you buy books even if you have no devices or apps registered. You can read them in the Cloud Reader.

Ah, I didn't know about the cloud reader. I have never used it and don't even know how. But I did say you have to have something. I did notice that eschwartz says you can override the warning that you have no device and buy it anyway. But I would have no idea how you could download it. Perhaps they are thinking you are going to buy a device or get one for Christmas.

Yes, that's perfectly true: you can't download it without a device or app; all that you can do is read it in the Cloud Reader (ie in a web browser). I'm sure you're right about someone planning to buy a Kindle being the intended audience for such a capability.

And I said you don't.

You can activate the Cloud Reader as a Kindle device, but if you don't you can still purchase and Amazon won't stop you. They just warn you that you don't have anything to read it on, and if you click buy anyway they offer you links to the apps IIRC.
