I think you'll like Rivers of London/Midnight Riot. This series grabbed me from the very beginning, and is just much better than I expected. And, for those who enjoy audio books, the Audible versions of these are superbly read by Kobna Holdbrook-Smith, whose voice is perfect for these. (Also, a nice touch, these are WhisperSync for Voice enabled for all books in the series.)

I completed my Dead Beat Halloween re-read yesterday. It was a great re-visit!! I think I'll take a long weekend off (of reading) and then go back to reading An Artificial Night on Monday.

An excellent novel in the world first introduced in Three Parts Dead. I'm looking forward to the next ones a lot. Luckily they seem to be self-contained novels in a wider framework, rather than one story split over several books.

Next up: 1636: The Viennese Waltz by Paula Goodlett and Geog Huff. My most recent purchase, thanks to a lucky coupon code in the latest Kobo competition.

Finished Ben Aaronovitch's Moon Over Soho.

It was great fun; even better than Midnight Riot/Rivers of London, as the action seemed a bit more plausible (Yes, I know, jazz vampires ... but I like to see an author keep it real ).

For a contrast, I've started Christopher Fowler's Full Dark House, starring Bryant and May of the Peculiar Crimes Unit.

Just finished "Trigger and Friends" by James H. Schmitz, edited by Eric Flint. This is the third volume in the collected edition of Schmitz's "Hub Federation" stories, and I bought it from Baen in Jan 2001.

An extremely enjoyable collection, consisting of a novel ("Legacy"), plus half a dozen shorter works, plus an interesting essay from Eric Flint describing how (and why) he edited the stories in the book, which is a fascinating insight into what editors actually do. Apparently Flint got a lot of flak from some people for having edited the stories, and here he explains why he thought the edits were necessary, and he gives the "before" and "after" versions of the text.

Highly recommended. Schmitz is a much under-rated author, to my mind.

A splendid look at things from the Austro-Hungarian perspective. A most enjoyable book, which kept me reading long into the night to finish it.

Next up: Grantville Gazette #56 edited by Paula Goodlett

Perhaps a bit of a Grantville overdose, we shall see.

I got onto the reserve list for The Handsome Man's De Luxe Cafe before its release date. So, I was the first one to check out this most recent entry in the No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency series by Alexander McCall Smith. Just started reading it last night, but I know it won't take me very long to finish it.

Finished it on Halloween and returned it to the library since I'm sure others will be wanting to borrow it.

I'm listening to another book by Alexander McCall Smith: Bertie's Guide to Life and Mothers, the 9th in his 44 Scotland Street series. Although the UK publication date was July 2013, the US release is scheduled for February 2015! When I saw that the audio had become available in August (in the UK), I placed an Internet order and had the CDs delivered to a colleague living in England. We met up at a conference in October and I brought the disks home. I'm currently in the middle of disk 7 of 8, and should finish the book in the next week.

On the Kindle, I'm reading Nightmares! by Jason Segel and Kirsten Miller. I have to tell you that Nightmares! is an AMAZING book. RUN to your nearest store or library and get yourself a copy.

I just finished Hal Spacejock 6: Safe Art by Simon Haynes, and it was quite enjoyable, as are all the books of the Spacejock series.

All good, except the deMarco story which suffers from bittiness. That is, she jumps from scene to scene and character to character far too frequently, and assumes that the audience is as intimately familiar with the cast fo characters and situations as she is.

Next: F&SF November 2014 edited by Gordon van Gelder. (I might as well read all my November 2014 purchases before anything else!)

She's an author I really can't get on with. I just don't like her writing style at all. I'm not saying she's a bad author, just that her writing style doesn't mesh with my reading style .

The Goblin Emperor by Katherine Addison! So good. Think The Last Emperor meets Tolkien and Labyrinth and written very well! I'm raving because it has been quite some time since I read a fantasy this good.

I finished Fool Moon by Jim Butcher and enjoyed it very much. Even more than Storm Front. The writing was better and there was more character development in this one.

I will get to more Dresden Files books soon, but first I'm going to read The Rithmatist by Brandon Sanderson. I've had my eye on this one for awhile.

Just finished The Map of Heaven by Eben Alexander and was not impressed at all.
