Is new PW imminent?

I never let my iPad adjust brightness on its own so I'm glad that feature can be turned off. There is always some sort of crap around the edges of my Kindle screen and it annoys me, so I'm happy about the flush screen. I figure the Kindle Voyage is an inexpensive gadget "fix" compared to the $900 iPhone I had my eye on. It took several days before the shipping estimate slipped past when I would still be here to get it and removed the temptation.

I would've been very surprised if this option was not available. You can do it for any other device with auto-adjust.

Wonder how they can claim the best contrast? Maybe only among Kindles? I doubt the contrast goes up simply by higher resolution.

A question for those of you who have a Kobo. Do you purchase your books from the Kobo store or from the Amazon store and then "fix" them for the Kobo? I agree that the Kobo HD looks nice too, especially with the ability to use an SD card, but I have always had a kindle.

I have been using a Kobo Aura HD since it came out, and have never purchased a single Kobo book. I buy them all from Amazon or Baen. I was a Kindle use for years before that so I was going to have to convert my existing library anyhow. I never saw the need to get tied to a second library.

Going back to Kindle now.

Contrast is an objective measure. The figures come from the screen manufacturer, eInk.

Yup, eInk publishes the contrast specs (which I feel, at least until I see th voyage's screen), to be far more important than pixel density per se.)

That's what I do. I occasionally buy from kobo, but usually from Amazon. I like to reformat my books so I side load everything. I got rid of my PW1 and my Fire HD'13, but I side loaded to them, too. (Fire HD 6 on order )

As technology moves forwards the actual reading experience goes backwards - that's progress for you!

As replies to your comments confirm - the majority of end users don't care about this retrograde step in the presentation of type - so why should/would ereader manufacturers do something about improving it?

As is so often the way when consumers who don't know any better are fed rubbish it starts to become the norm.

Exactly. If they've never realised they may have a choice - why would they lobby for improvements? Many people who go straight from paper to Kindle, not trying other e-readers (or twigging that they even exist), may not really realise how font choice and typography can make big difference to some people's reading experience. It may take a groundswell of people offering feedback before anything will be done (if at all).

Or perhaps most people genuinely just don't care. I've never bought paper books on the basis of what typeface they use, and I would never base my decision on what ebook reader to buy on that consideration either. I simply don't care about it. For me, the story is what matters, not what font it's displayed in. I have never changed from the default font on any of the many ebook readers I've owned. I don't have a clue what the default font on my Kindle PW2 is; whatever it is, I'm perfectly happy with it.
