Problem reading .tpz format books

I'm trying to read a (kindle) book in Calibre. I add it to my library. It shows up with a file format of TPZ.

When I double click on the book I get a pop up window that says "Book Name" Already in calibre with buttons to select all, select non, copy to clipboard, cancel and OK.

I've been "Canceling"

I checked other .tpz files. They all show as tpz and behave the same when I try to read them in calibre.

I can read other books in my library that are not tpz format.

Ideas about what's happening and how I can read tpz formatted books in calibre?

I do not believe you will get much satisfaction from trying to read .tpz files in Calibre. As I understand it they basically just consist of a set of scanned images of pages so are not readily convertible to any other format.

I am not sure if the Kindle app for PC/Mac can read such books. I would have thought it could as .tpz is an Amazon format.

The Kindle app for Mac can read the books.

I've gotten used to using Calibre. I can make due with Kindle, but it's like taking a step back in time.

I'm wondering why calibre tries to add the book a second time.

What do you have in Preferences->Tweaks-># Control behavior of the book list

And does your MAC have file association for TPZ, I don't have anything - hence the above msg makes sense.

Very odd that double click should want to add the book.

Double-click will open the book for reading.


Depending on the viewer configuration, calibre may want to open certain book formats using the OS default, instead of specifically passing it to the ebook-viewer.app; when the OS is configured to open certain filetypes with calibre GUI, you end up (re-)adding the book.

That is the problem. When you open the book for viewing, it is probably not configured to open with the internal viewer.

So calibre passes the file to the OS to open, and the OS is configured to open .tpz files with the calibre GUI.

When you open a file with the calibre GUI, it gets added to the library.

You must go to Preferences ===> Look & Feel ==> Behavior ==> Use internal viewer for:

and tick the box for TPZ.

Actually, no. There is no TPZ option, I think calibre doesn't understand it. I guess because the only ones in the wild are from Amazon and very possibly DRM-locked. And the plugin-that-must-not-be-named renames it to HTMLZ.

(You can capture the log file by running calibre from the command-line, using "calibre-debug -g", or by clicking the dropdown by Preferences and selecting Restart in debug mode.)

You can control the behavior of doubleclicks on the books list.

Choices: open_viewer, do_nothing, edit_cell, edit_metadata. Selecting anything other than open_viewer has the side effect of disabling editing a field using a single click.

Default: open_viewer.

Example: doubleclick_on_library_view = 'do_nothing'

You can also control whether the book list scrolls horizontal per column or per pixel. Default is per column.

We cross posted - exactly as I predicted - replace that association with a program that can view TPZ files

A DRM-free topaz book is rarer than a blue-speckled pup. And calibre couldn't read/convert it even if it was drm-free. I think it might be able to retrieve some of the meta-data, but that's about it. You'll have to read it with a Kindle or a Kindle reading app.

I don't know how that association got set (it is certainly set on my linux machines -- by calibre) but it is the only explanation I can think of, and it fits the problem.
