Yes but you shouldn't need to do that. There should be nothing that causes apks that are for data enabled devices to execute on a non data enabled device. Just another of the many defects.

You're right PL but in real_onyx_world we have to fight against lots of bugs. Often, uncorrect bugs :-(
So we have to use our adaptability to survive
:-)

I suspect onyx doesn't care about their software at all, as i noticed in last years:
they have fantastic hardware and heavily buggy software.

I'm happy to report that even without the hack - renaming the files Phone.apk & TelephonyProviders.apk, with only the mobile data turned off & airplane mode turned on, the M96 remains at 99% idle during sleep. No need to turn off the device to save battery, so disabled auto power off. Just press power button & I'm back to the default reader with my last read page open, ready for me to resume crunching words...

EDIT: As of the Sept 26th software update, renaming the apk files seems mandatory, otherwise, the battery charge theft by Cell Standby continues.
