K5 FW 5.x ScreenSavers Hack

Hi…

Last night I turned on WiFi without thinking and Amazon forced an update on me.

I’m now the not-so-proud owner of a Paperwhite 1st generation with Firmware 5.4.4.2 (223310003).

At first I wasn’t too concerned, as it had happened before and I simply reinstalled python and linkss, but this time it doesn’t seem to work.

I installed Update_python_0.10.N_install_touch_pw.bin and Update_linkss_0.17.N_install_touch_pw.bin in that order by putting them into /Volumes/Kindle, ummounting and disconnecting from USB before using the “Settings” —> “Update Kindle” menu.

In both cases Kindle claimed that it was installing the software and there were no visible error messages.

I then threw in another “Restart device“ for good measure.

Yet I’m still stuck with the original screenscaver.

Did I miss something?

Man, when I get this stuff fixed I’m so gonna block the updates with a router filter rule or one of the hacks.

@PeterBr: Define 'original screensaver'.

You can try uninstalling linkss, manually removing the linkss folder, and then reinstalling, see if it shakes things into place...

I tried the following via Skript to make sure of the order and steps and reproducibility. After each step, which is basically just copying the packed to /Volumes/Kindle and ejected the device, I removed the Kindle from USB (at the Kindle's side), used the Kindle menu to update software. After each update, the Kindle reported update okay.

Yet no screensavers.

I then deleted the linkss folder, and repeated step four and did a touch /Volumes/Kindle/linkss/cover. And yes, /Volumes/Kindle/linkss and its contents had been created.

Still no covers.

I assume that I couldn't have installed if my jailbreak had been unbroken by the latest firmware upgrade?

Is this a device with "Special Offers" ?
I.E: The lower cost one with Amazon ads.

(Yes, I read where this had worked previous to the OTA update but an Amazon error (independent of the update, but not independent of having had a wifi connection) could have change its status to an S.O. Kindle.)

@PeterBr: You forgot the 'remove the linkss folder manually', which was sneakily the whole point of the process .

(That, and you don't need to touch Python at all).

And, yep, if your JailBreak was broken, the update process would fail with a U007 error.

Plus, you didn't really answer my 'describe the screensaver' question. That you appear to be speaking of a single image smells like Waterstones...

Ah, okay. That was the most important question for me. If the jailbreak's not broken, the process should work, provided I do everything in the correct orders. (Which I thought I did, but apparently I missed something.)

Oh no, I do mean the standard Amazon Kindle screensaver (it is a standard German Paperwhite 1 directly com amazon.de) , which has a couple of artsy print-related images like typwriter keys, type, alphabet blocks, pencils, centered ninbs, etc which change whenever I turn off the Kindle.

I've had this one before.
I had to uninstall the hacks, then delete the links folder, after that I rebooted (just because I work in IT and it often helps with issues) before I had to reinstall the hacks.

Simply reinstalling over the top and deleting linkss didn't work, whatever the issue was remained which is why I went through the above process.

Close, but close only counts in horseshoes and nuclear weapons[1].

If the Jailbreak is not broken, you can install our update_*.bin files with the "update your Kindle" function.

if they work once installed has nothing to do with the Jailbreak **itself**.
(The most recent Jailbreak for the K5/PW devices does additional things, which might effect the installed application (MKK installation) ).

The part about "correct order" -
Delete the directory sub-tree **between** the un-install current stuff and the re-install steps.

I'm still not clear exactly *when* you removed the folder, and I'd like you to try *NOT* to do anything else (ie. no cover setup or anything else). (Basically, in order: really just uninstall linkss, remove linkss folder, install linkss, STOP).

Although, knc1 just made me remember something: which FW is this running? And how old is the jailbreak? You might need to update the JB for it to handle FW 5.4 properly on a PW1...
(As a matter of fact, try that first, that might just be the key: install jb, restart).

Those were were last three steps. Well, that and another restart. I tried this again:

* Uninstall_linkss (implicit restart)
* rm -fr /Volumes/Kindle/linkss (no restart)
* Install linkss (implicit restart)

Opened a book I hadn't opened before, waited for sleep mode. Result: Standard Screensaver cover. Made sure to touch empty "cover" file.

Firmware 5.4.4.2, Amazon pushed in on me when I turned on WLAN while not quite awake. :-/


The jailbreak's pretty old. Mid-January 2013, according to posts on this side and the oldest date on my hacks/folder, where I also saved

400552 17 Jan 2013 kpw_jb.zip

which I used then to JB my then brand-new Paperwhite V1 Amazon.de adfree.

I actually did both, but I forgot to write that.

i.e. I did the install and tested it on a a book and only when that didn't to anything I checked that the linkss folder had been created and did the touch cover thingie.

Hi-

I'm having difficulty getting the screensavers hack to run on a PW2. This a new device that came running 5.4.5.1.

I downgraded it to 5.4.3.2 and installed Jailbreak 1.11.N. Got JAILBREAK message on home screen, so I assumed the JB was successful.

Installed BackDoorLock and everything seemed to work fine.

I do not intend to use book covers, so I did not install the Python package. I downloaded kindle-linkss-0.17.N.zip from this thread and uploaded Update_linkss_0.17.N_install_pw2.bin to the PW2 root directory. Ejected & unplugged the Kindle and did *[HOME] -> [MENU] > Settings -> [MENU] > , but Update Your Kindle was grayed out. Tried this multiple times with no luck.

Any help would be much appreciated. Thx.
