A reliable source of epubs that haven't been altered beyond the author's intention would be: the author.

Is this free? Not always.

Is this high quality? Not always.

But if you prioritize the author's words as came from the author, then there you have it.

But as self help books go, they are often written with personal experience taken as universal truth or anecdotes taken as evidence, and that, IMHO, is a true danger to the mental health of others.

Jeez, we've been through this already. Anyone with a computer can alter the text of a public domain book and upload the digital file, with no one being the wiser. It may be malicious, it may be a misguided desire to be inoffensive. Doesn't matter what the motive is.

For which there is no solution. Why discuss it if it can't be fixed? When it comes to public domain books, you can either trust/hope that the uploader/seller has not made undocumented changes (or even ask them), or you can forgo the ebook and buy/borrow/find a print copy that suits.

None of that changes the fact that the answer to the OP's original question is; "you don't." But with a little research, you might be able to limit the possibility of getting an altered text. If that still doesn't let you (the OP) sleep at night, then don't read ebooks.
