Maybe we can create database that stores digital signatures/hashes of the ebooks signed by the authors/publishers/creators. That is more akin to checking integrity of downloaded files off the internet. One needs digital certificates to compare against.

Well, you could start right here on Mobileread. We've got a huge library of epubs. No.. Wait... Those have been altered in some way. Sorry.

Ok, there's Gutenberg. Lots of older public domain books that offer epub. No... Wait... Those have been altered too in some way.

Looks like you're out of luck and will have to go back to paper, but then there's no guarantee that they haven't been altered between editions.

Looks like you're just going to have to go back to television, because we all know television shows are *never* altered.

I get that you're joking, but there are MR uploaders who have admitted to altering language in books they've added to the library, without noting such changes. One person mentioned changing "gay" to "light-hearted," I believe.

While the OP's concerns seem much broader and rather paranoid--malicious, outright falsification of material--I do think that overzealous tinkering with public domain material is a legitimate concern.

Some of us go the other way . All my uploads of Jane Austen's novels, for example, I've edited from later text back to the first edition text.

There's Wikisource, of course. The epubs their site generates won't win a beauty contest, but the intention there is to present authoritative texts. As is the intention of many uploaders to the Patricia Clark Memorial Library, btw., including myself. (Though one of my uploads has been altered: If you read one particular poem you will receive a subliminal message that will make you travel to my hometown and do unspeakable things to my neighbours' nasty fat cat. Nobody's done it yet - it's a shame that no-one seems to read poetry anymore...)

What makes an official version, anyhow? Look at what happened to The Picture of Dorian Gray (via Wikipedia):

In this case, the question is very easy to answer: there are two official versions! (Or three, if you want to count the version Wilde gave to the magazine and which was recently published as The Uncensored Picture of Dorian Gray.)

IIRC the OP is looking for free self help books mainly and mostly these are under copyright.

So under the assumption this is still the case.

There is no place to get these books for free legally AFAIK. There is no website that can tell you for sure that there are no alterations made. Sure maybe they can say that, but you would be foolish to believe them.

I don't think you are trying to get illegal books, just that what you are looking for is not there.

Your best source is the public library if you want free books that have not been altered in a harmful way.
