So I was browsing Kobo's device accessories page, and saw this entertaining warning about the "bookstyle cover" for the Touch:

WARNING: Using this product will expose you to lead, a chemical known to the state of California to cause cancer, birth defects and other harm to a developing baby. Wash hands after touching this product. http://www.kobo.com/accessories/kobo...e-cover-2.htmlSo yeah, just the thing to do for an hour before bedtime... |

lead's really common in handbags, shoes, belts, anything with cheap leather or fake leather. i think they estimate something like 90+% of the consumer goods with leather or fake leather have it.

cheap consumer goods. made in countries with little or no oversight. i'm sure my glo cover has tons of heavy metals. Last edited by dakini; 06-11-2014 at 03:59 AM. |

So the moral is: don't use this product when in California. That'll solve it

Civil law suite or California law probably caused these warnings.

Typical Californian half assed overreaction to anything. Make a blanket statement with no consideration of the level of exposure necessary to be problematic and force people to wonder. I'd be a lot more impressed with a government that actually investigated and placed restrictions on the trade of items that actually are harmful rather than might be...

Like all 'good' ideas, it wasn't completely thought through. Due to the sheer amount of toxic chemicals out there, Prop 65 lead to an over proliferation of these little signs and notices, so they are now mostly ignored. |

I can understand the well meaning intentions, applaud them even, but politicians especially need to think things through rather than merely taking the most expedient path to another term of office. I think we need to demand more of politicians, unfortunately we're often faced with the choice of "the lesser of two evils" rather than candidates we'd actually want in office.

I've often wondered if we might be better off enacting laws that clearly spell out the burdens of office and offer the public a third choice in all elections, a lottery formed of all candidates who wish to run for office. If you lose the race you're in, you become part of the pool for every position that is voted on as a lottery right down to dog catcher and if your number comes up you MUST accept and perform the job to the letter of the law. We'd lose enough of the clowns with big ideas and nothing more than deep pockets alone that it would improve the breed immeasurably. Yes, Virginia that was satire... really, honest. Well, maybe it could work. Hmmmmm. Last edited by TechniSol; 06-15-2014 at 11:13 PM. |

That being said, Prop 65 completely bypassed the politicians, it was a ballot referendum, where they gathered 100s of thousands of signatures to get it onto the ballot, and then got just less than 2/3rds of the votes to pass it. Then again, this just proves that Californians will sign anything... |
