Unless Smashwords is using DRM for library loans? (reasonable...)

My library has been very responsive when I've recommended titles to them. They've bought about 95% of the ones I've suggested, which makes me a very happy reader.

I suspect Smashwords provides a plain ePub, and Overdrive adds the DRM. Similarly, Sony (and Diesel, I think) applied DRM to Smashwords-supplied books.

Overdrive offers Open epub (Carina Press, for instance).

The publisher is OK with no DRM, apparently they trust the readers. DRM hinders you reading the book freely, even within the context of library loans. (how to put ADE EPUBs on a Kindle?? Open EPUB allows that with library loans even without a Kindle Checkout option.) I assumed OverDrive doesn't care about DRM unless the publisher does. So the question is, do Smashwords titles have DRM in OverDrive? I guess we will just have to wait and see....

Since Smashwords have said that all books (including freebies) will have a minimum price of $1.99 via Overdrive, because of DRM overheads, it would appear that they will.

(Plus, authors get to opt-in to library distribution. They need to get as many as possible to opt-in. Hence, DRM.)

The trouble with open epub non-DRM library books is they can't be returned early. If you borrow one and finish it in a day you are stuck with it taking up one of your checkouts until the loan period expires. If your library allows only a few checkouts at a time, this can be a problem. I avoid borrowing open epub library books for this reason. If my library starts carrying Smashwords books I hope they will have library DRM.
