What happens to Adobe DE when I upgrade the operating system?

Hi, I have ADE on a computer with windows xp and I am planning to change the os. My question is: what will happen when I will reinstall ADE and I will insert again my Adobe ID? It is the same computer but with a new os: will it be recognized by Adobe like an already authorized device or will it be registered like a new device? More generally: which parameter is used by ADE to recognize a device? Something hardware (eg, the mac address) or something software? In the first case, it would be persistant upon changing os on the same machine, otherwise it is not. Thanks a lot. |

You are only allowed to have an X number of registrations on ADE at one time. Unregister it before you change your OS. Then reinstall and reregister. Apache |

If you upgrade the OS I believe your settings/authorization should be kept. If you reinstall by wiping the HDD, it will be wiped as well. Either way, you can copy over your books and read them on any other authorized instance of ADE. You can only be authorized on 6 computers/devices, and I believe they will give you more as time goes by (to compensate for lost devices/old computers). It is stored as a (copyable ) config folder somewhere (not sure where) but I believe would be based on hardware-specific details of some sort. Quote:

If you don't get your registration slots back, what good does deregistering do? It actually is a hidden keyboard combination. ALT-D, or ALT-SHIFT-D. I'll have to look that up. |

The hotkey to deregister the computer is CTRL+SHIFT+D. I have always deregistered before upgrading ADE, and I've been playing with Linux, so I did register and deregister at least 6 times, possibly more. Maybe slots just free up, if a certain device is registered, then deregistered and not used for X amount of time. Spoiler:

I thought ADE Registration worked like any other Adobe product registration. I have had other Adobe products that had been registered to the maximum amount of computers. I then deregister one and was able to register it again on a different computer. I never maxed out ADE ever since I became friends with Alf. Apache |

Gee De registering implies the computer still works I reformatted my ADE registered, XP computer because the OS became so damaged I could not launch most programs. So how does one de register dead equipment? My first Astak is dead and recycled. My first ADE PC reformatted (the hardware is the same). A hardwar 'fingerprint' would help identify and recover a 'lost' registration system. Adobe probably has no interest in that. |

I have heard of people contacting Adobe and getting them to delete the registration of a computer. Apache |

I replaced the motherboard and cpu in my laptop and had to reauthorize it the next time I started ADE (version 1.7.2), so it does key on something in the hardware. But it might have a software key too.

From all the answers (thanks!), it seems to me that it is not clear in a definitive way the way Adobe DRM works: it seems like they are looking for "security through obscurity".... A good question now seems to be: is it possibile to see somewhere which devices are authorized for a certain account? I tried to login at adobe, but there I couldn't find this anywhere. |
