Just finished Evil Under the Sun by Agatha Christie per the excellent reco by HarryT. Next up A Morbid Taste for Bones by Ellis Peters. This is the first in the Brother Cadfael series. I read all of these back in the 80s but can't hurt to have another go. |

I need to put some of those on my TBR list. He was a fascinating character on the PBS series.

I recently finished reading Agency Woman by John A A Logan. I found this novel fascinating. It felt like a study rather than a story. The action and the narrative took second place to an inside to outside examination of a burnt-out agent dragged unwillingly back into the game. I loved it, but I think you need to know and approve of what you're getting into beforehand to avoid disappointment. The action only warms up a little towards the end of the novel and you spend most of the time inhabiting the mind of this burn-out. In the end, I felt that the author had given me a clear reason never to romanticise espionage. I give it a strong recommendation (with the provisos mentioned) and will take the opportunity to again give a shout out for his earlier novel The Survival of Thomas Ford which I also thoroughly enjoyed. |

It's getter more and more rare to come across books that aren't available for ereaders, but it's still irritating when it happens. I suppose if enough people request books in the Brother Cadfael series, the publisher will take notice. I already clicked the "Tell the Publisher! I'd like to read this book on Kindle" button at Amazon. Maybe if I started a chain email. Everyone who reads this: If you love your country and care about decency, our children, and all good things, forward this to 10 of your closest friends. |

I finished several books in the past week or so. I read Akhenaten and The Picture of Dorian Gray for the clubs and really enjoyed the reread of Dorian Gray. I read Murder at Fenway Park by Troy Soos. It was okay, but I'd like to know if his writing gets any better as the series progresses. If not, I don't think I'll read another. I like the time period and the baseball/mystery element, but found the writing pretty juvenile. I read The Son of a Certain Woman by Wayne Johnston. This was very different than anything else by Johnston, but a fabulous book! I'm actually not a big John Irving fan, but this story could have been concocted by Irving. Johnston is a great writer and I couldn't put this book down. |

OK, this is getting serious. I really am going to have to haunt the Kobo thread for a while.
