Kepub or Epub
Have some epubs converted in calibre to kepub, only notice that the default size of the letters had to be much larger, had to put the slicer totally to the right.
On the top you see the title, on the bottom I see the current chapter and how many page there are to the next chapter. Understood that I can change that in the config file of the reader. But is that all, is there nothing more, beside that a kepub is bigger to ?? Whats the advantage of Kepub versus epub ? |

I had not noticed the difference in fonts - one difference is on page numbering: total number of pages with epub rendere, chapter screen turns on Kepub. The difference I personally like best is that footnotes can be previewed as pop-ups with the kepub renderer (but not with the epub renderer). I think firmware versions also change the differences. There is a kepub.epub thread with differences summarised from this post onwards, but it is quite old, so some of them may no longer apply.

For me, footnote selection is much easier in kepub than epub.

For me, the advantage of kepub over epub is that it solves an issue that presented itself when I switched from Kindle to Kobo -- on my Aura HD, if an epub file had a particularly long paragraph, the screen wouldn't let the paragraph run over the page. Rather, there would be blank spaces at the bottom of a page (akin to the end of a chapter), and the long paragraph would begin on the next page. It was very frustrating, and converting all my files to kepub fixed it.

You can use the superpatch to fix the long paragraph bug.
Kepubs, IMO, waste too much space with header and footer. |

I have patched it to, so long paragraph and long footer and header doesn't count here to,so for as far as I can see,I actually converted some epub's,there is no advantage of kepub, it only takes more space in size.

I prefer the image viewer and popup footnotes in kepubs. Certainly don't need those features for all my ebooks, but I like the header/footer layout and per chapter page numbering, so I use all kepubs (keeps look/feel more consistent).

I prefer kepubs more. Now I'm converting all books I'm about to load to kepubs first. I'm one of the rare few here who doesn't mind the space wasted by the header and footer. Compared to epubs, kepubs tend to be neater to look at (and yes, that's the main reason why I like kepubs). Second reason is I like how it displays the percentage and estimated time left on the home screen.
Also, on another note. I've noticed that with books that came directly from kobo, there is an added feature on the footnote that includes the reading statistics. And this doesn't appear in books that I've converted. Is there like a specific format to the book? I know this isn't the right place to ask, but it also covers some differences between kepubs and epubs. So, anybody know the answer? Greatly appreciated... |

that app gives per-chapter page numbers even with the vanilla epub format - it also offers a "use kobo styling" toggle -it seems strange that you van have those features in a basic kobo android app but not on a dedicated kobo e-reader. I quite like the large screen and that tablet is if anything a tad lighter than my auda HD . the android app has that annoying turn page for start of large paragraph bug though, same as the aura. I've not tried converting epub to kepub & sendiing that format to tablet, but I am guessing it would also work Ok. For me the per-chapter page numbers makes for a better tablet reading experience than converting to azw & reading with the kindle app. |
