I've used the Vocabulary Builder on a side loaded AZW3 without an ASIN and it works perfectly.

Has it been changed? You certainly used to be able to add or edit an ASIN in Calibre's metadata editor.

You can add an ASIN as an identifier to a calibre book record, but as far as I am aware, it has never been used for the EXTH identifier field in a converted book. A UUID is used. Kovid wants converted books to be unique from the Amazon copies, since it could cause clashes on your Kindle.

I have a PW1 that updated to 5.4.4 and I can use the vocabulary builder on a side loaded file. The file is definately an AZW3 as I converted it in Calibre from a mobi as I wanted to use an embedded font.

I'm not sure what you mean by "and mobimetadata editor is for mobi, not AZW3" but I know what format of file I sideloaded as I specifically sent the AZW3 only.

I have been using the mobimetadata editor on my azw3 files, they are converted using the "both" method in Calibre. So I am not sure what that changes when using the editor.

Thank you I'll try the update now.

I just meant that if I update and Vocabulary builder doesn't work on my PW and sideloaded azw3, I would have a problem since I was just trying out pre-emptively to use mobidata editor and it was not letting me choose azw3 file. I didn't think you were using it.

ETA: Updated my PW2, Vocabulary Builder is working. Thanks once again

Maybe this is kicking the dead horse but I am getting a bit confused here? Can you verify that all of your side loaded books work with Vocabulary Builder? I have some that do and some that don't.
I also checked on my wife's PW1 and Vocabulary Builder is working identically to my PW2 so I don't believe that there is anything wrong with my PW2 (or PW1).
I was able to use Calibre to send a "problem" book to my PW2 via Amazon's and then Vocabulary Builder works, as expected since this is mentioned on Amazon's website.

I can't confirm them all, no sorry, I am switching over to a iPad mini for commuting so I don't read so much on the Paperwhite now. I have used it extensively for one book and I haven't had any issues. That book is a side loaded AZW3 with an embedded font.
