				Temporarily fed up with reading

Well, I must be sick. I read more than my average by this time of the year and suddenly a block. I have no patience, nothing interests me, not even a nice bargain would tempt me. What to do? Before when I felt like this I'd go on Agatha Christie binge reading but I already read almost all of them.

I've been there. Wouldn't necessarily say "fed up with reading," but I certainly get stuck sometimes finding something I want to read.

I find a first-person narrative usually snaps me out of it. That or genre magazines with short-stories by authors with whom I'm unfamiliar. |

Perhaps you just need a break from reading. Try waiting a few days before starting a book. Or read something from a different genre than you usually read, if you feel you must read something.

Seems to come in waves for me. Whenever I come off a good wave of 2-3 books I really enjoy, there's usually a lull where nothing grabs me for a while. I just keep trying and eventually get to ride another good wave. I tend to go for shorter books when I'm in the lull phase because I can't muster the enthusiasm for starting something long.

When it happens to me (which it does, a few times each year), I just find something else to do for a while. Movies, video games, or watching something from my classic TV show collection.

I've had periods where I don't feel like reading. There is always DVD movies or OTR episodes on Mp3 to listen to among other things. Sometimes a person just needs a change of pace.

I have been grumpy about this for years, myself. When I was young, I could get lost in a book so easily. I think Internet addiction, audiobooks, and TV are what did it to me. I also think the worries and concerns of adult life keep me from being able to relax enough.

When I get out of reading mode completely, I usually switch to word games on the iPad. Every once in a while I go through a TV phase, but ever since LOST let me down so terribly, I have not been able to get into much on TV. Just finding something to watch while I pedal the stationary bike is a struggle. Hmmm... maybe I should start a thread for that?

When reading anything no longer interests me I turn to watching movies/TV series via streaming - esp. Jeeves & Wooster, Poirot, Marple, Midsomer Murders, etc - I will burn through a season of shows in a couple of days and then return to reading.

I have several hobbies and rotate between them. Some of them are creative, some are passive. Maybe your brain wants a change of pace so it can create something fun? Cooking is always a good one to start with when I want to do something.

There are many indie games that are good and quite cheap. http://www.gog.com/ is a good place to start for good, cheap games. For free TV series, hulu.com was pretty good. I haven't used them lately though. |

Thanks folks. I've been reading answers with interest. One problem for me is I won't substitute reading with watching. When I finish my daily chores, usually between 8.30 and 9 pm my head is rectangular, 40" in diameter and I need S.I.L.E.N.C.E. So I go to my woman's cave, sit on my sofa and wait until the noise of the day evaporates. Usually this is when I read. I like the moment when you wiggle on your behind, making yourself comfortable, with a book ahead of you. For the moment I surf through garbage on the internet because that's all I can stand.

My hobby is drawing but in the evenings too tired to take stuff out and start. Been today to a drawing club though. Perhaps I should have a look at those Christie‘s books I avoided because they were in 1st person. But not yet. For the moment everything is meh. Michio Kaku meh. War and Peace meh. Charlotte Bronte and Jane Austen meh. All the president's men with more than 50% discount meh. I hope it will pass soon...I feel guilty I don't read and it doesn't help. |

Video games, stamps, cars, movies, paintings... Take your pick! Personally if I ever got tired of literature, I think I would switch to porn. But you did not hear that ok? I just said that confidentially ![]() Last edited by Quexos; 02-17-2014 at 05:05 PM. |
