The last update was 5.3.9, released in November and was fairly minor. Amazon has said nothing about any future updates so anything you've read about them is unsubstantiated rumor.

An Amazon representative stated around the time PW2 launched that PW1 would get an update to add some unspecified subset of the new features (where feasible). While I cannot find a reference to this now, I remember this because it factored into my decision not to get a PW2.

So at least in my mind, there is some substance, and I'm assuming it will happen. There is some precedent: Kindle Touch got an update Jan 2013 after the launch of PW1 that brought it to feature parity with PW1. In this case the hardware is even more similar so changes needed to back port the firmware would be minimal.

OTOH at this point, I'd rather see popup footnotes come to the Fire....

History would suggest that there will be an update for both the PW1 and the Touch at some point in the future. Amazon have a good track record of retro-fitting new UI features to older devices.

I also recall the quote from Amazon. I believe it was from Peter Larson, Amazon VP for Kindle product development. It was fairly general and didn't make any promises or representations as to future updates but only said that Amazon is always reviewing their Kindle products and attempts to provide updates to improve them whenever possible, or something to that affect.
