Question What is tethering"

On Adobe Digital Editions list of Supported eBook Devices ...
Quote:
Kobo Inc || Kobo eReader N416 || Dedicated reading device, tethered
Kobo Inc || Literati Wireless Reader || Dedicated reading device, with WiFi
... what is a tethered device?
... connection to PC by cable (USB?) ?

The two above links goto the Kobo sales page ... eventually I figured the link should be...
http://www.kobo.com/devices?___store...store#ereaders

I have googled "what is a tethered device" ... but I am still none the wiser

Would appreciate any help

A "tether" is a rope or cord connection something to a bigger thing. You tether a rowboat to a larger boat to take it with you. In this case, they are talking about the need for the USB connection with the ereader. But, I think the "Kobo eReader N416" is the original Kobo and is no longer available.

Thanks davidfor

I grew up on the land, we tethered goats and the house cow to a post/stake in the ground.
But I had half guessed with IT devices a tether is a communication cable.
Just wanted to be sure.
eg, "Gay" has had a lot of meanings in my lifetime.

Thanks again

"Tethering" can refer to making use of your cell phone and its internet access (if you also have a data plan) as a wi-fi hotspot for your ereader (or laptop/netbook) to gain internet access.

Say you needed to download a book from your cloud storage, or wanted to buy a book and had to do it right then but you and your reader were away from home and weren't near any free wi-fi spots. There is a way you can "tether" your ereader to your phone, either wired or wireless, with certain phone apps or hacks, that will allow your reader internet access through your phone. There are many uses for such a setup, some of which might not be legal as far as your cell phone company is concerned. Sometimes they freely allow tethering, but sometimes it's clearly written as not allowed.

I setup my phone to be able to do it just in an extreme emergency if stranded and my netbook (and I think the Kobo Glo as well), but so far I've never had a need to use it. I'm sure there are people who use it more often though to get free data through their cell phone plans. I keep an SDcard with books on it in case I'm ever out and need to reset my reader so I'm not stuck with nothing to read, and I'd prefer doing that than hassling with tethering to get my cloud-stored ebooks.

Here's one example:

Thanks Ripplinger for your response,
My cell-phone is only for phone calls and SMS. No internet.

My first eReader USB connection to PC (thru Kobo Desktop) resulted in a safely remove lockup ... it also wiped out my extended clipboard app.
So Kobo Desktop is now gone.

How to store eBooks off the eReader has been a challenge, so far, because I didn't know until 12 hours ago how to download the .acsm files and with the help from others on this forum, now I know. Now also know what .ascm files are.
Adobe Digital Edition download is ready for installing ... I think I am now on my way.
I have just setup a NAS intranet at home, but android has been a challenge.
Hoping to store eBooks on the NAS, along with movies, music and work docs.

Cloud storage ... my personal cloud outperforms off site cloud in speed and access, my work files (AutoCad) are huge and if my net connection is down, my personal cloud is always there. (5bay (4 discs so far) 12TB, raid5)

I like your idea of a spare SDcard with your ebooks on it
Thank you for your help

In this context, I think that 'tethered' means the device doesn't have WiFi, and is communicated with through a USB port. The tethered part being the physically attached cable.

Actually the original Kobo had Bluetooth and could be linked to a Blackberry and books transferred that way.

Thanks murg + PeterT for your response,

Bluetooth and WiFi in this building don't get along with each other.
USB it must be.
