I never owned a Kindle, I do have the Kindle for Android app, but I've never actually paid for a Kindle book. When I was first researching getting an ebook reader it was still pretty soon after the Nineteen Eighty-Four debacle so I didn't want a device with WiFi where my books could potentially be deleted without my knowledge. I also wanted the device to handle more formats than just Kindle books, and I wanted to be able to get books from different sources besides Amazon.

I buy from Kobobooks. I only have kindle keyboard and paperwhite 2

Having any type of reader is not a death sentence sort of speak, where you only have to buy books from a seller who sold the device to you.
Calibre is your friend.

Calibre is indeed your friend and I buy books from whatever book store I choose. Of course, most of the time it's Amazon because they tend to have the better prices. Since most readers have WIFI now, that is not a big reason to stay away from Amazon.

On another point. I don't think Amazon caused Sony to slither out of the US market. I would worry though about Sony leaving other markets. It doesn't seem like their hearts are really in the ereader market, which is a shame.

Trust me, I'm WELL aware.

This was my thought process about 6 years ago when I was new to the game.

I began ereading in 2003 on my Palm Pilot and was an avid user of Fictionwise. So my first ereader had to be one that used PDB format, since I didn't know how to deDRM. I got a Foxit eSlick. Not the best ereader, but it worked for a while. I enjoyed the eInk for sure.

Then I got an iPad as a gift (2011) and tried using that for awhile, since the eSlick frustrated me because it wasn't touch (after having my Palm touch and then iPad touch screens).

The ereading app I like the most on the iPad was Kobo. I tried every one out there including Kindle and B&N. I love the Kobo reading life and the awards.

So, when I finally took the plunge this year to get a new ereader, I got a Kobo and have not regretted it. I have both the Aura HD (LOVE!) and the mini. I find the mini to be less stable, software wise, but I still like being able to carry it in my pocket or purse.

I've been thinking about getting a Kindle HD for reading PDFs but am not sure if it will be worth the money or just frustrating since it is a step back into non-touch screen. I HATE reading on the iPad, too bright.
