Post PW1 minor update: 5.3.8.1
Amazon has quietly released yesterday a new FW update for Kindle Paperwhite 1st generation, 5.3.8.1.

No new features, so, the listed ones are of 5.3.8:

— Search terms highlighted in search results
When you search for a word or phrase within a book, the search terms will appear highlighted within the search results. When you tap a result to go to that location in the book, the search terms will appear highlighted on the page.

— Select other dictionaries when looking up a word
When you look up a word in the dictionary, you can choose to look up the word in other dictionaries on your device from within the dictionary definition window.

— View other definitions of a word
When you look up a word that has multiple meanings for the same spelling (homonym), you can navigate through each of the available definitions from within the dictionary definition window.

So what is the deal with 5.3.8.1.? Is it a bug update? Like the light not going out when you close the magnet? Otherwise I am not going to update. I have to manually do it anymore, doesn't update over the wi-fi for some reason.

I wonder if it's the lighting setting. I notice after the last update that 8 became 5 on my lighting. Suddenly 8 was too bright at night and I had to turn it down to 5. Well if the fonts still work I guess I will update later when I remember to bring the PW downstairs.

Does this update have to be applied manually? The "Update Your Kindle" menu is not highlighted on my Kindle.

If you wait long enough and leave wifi on Amazon will eventually push the update. But that usually occurs over a period of days or weeks.

In this case I'm not planning to manually apply as there are no new features, and if it fixes bugs I'm unlikely to notice.

Okay I upgraded and immediately noticed that my light setting was changed it was on 5 but after the update it suddenly was on 9 I changed it back to 8 but haven't tested it in the dark yet. So I do think it had something to do with the light.

Fonts still work so that is a relief.

Before the update, my light setting was on lowest. Update didn't change my light setting. I am sure it is related about the clock. My clock was showing wrong time. After the update my kindle started showing another wrong time. Very exciting improvement. This was what I was waiting over a month.

The update was most likely related to bug fixes, specifically with the light.

At least my 1st gen Paperwhite was wasting half of its battery while being shut off. I took a closer look, and it turned out the light was on, even as the kindle was supposedly powered down. The update fixed that.

I think not the update but restarting fixed that light. I sometimes have the same problem and many other problems that occur if I don't restart the kindle over a long time.

Not sure either, mine stopped doing that.

The update seems to me it made the light better to read by? My imagination? Don't know. Seems like I need to turn the light down, and the shadows at the bottom have disappeared.
