I always thought you needed the audible app but it turns out you don't The book is downloaded to an audible authorised iTunes account and then sync'd onto the idevice

Just wondering, the audible app can play non audible books that one would normally listen to in the music app I've done this before but since the big IOS update I have had a few issues with the audible app keeping the spot in non audible books. Any one else experiencing this?

I don't have 7, so I haven't had that problem. My iPt4 stopped at 6.1.3.

Interesting. I guess I should have figured that as that's how you had to do things with older iPod's. I just hardly ever connect my iPod to a computer and download directly to the Audible app so I guess I didn't think about it.

To answer jangell2's question then, no you shouldn't have to use the Audible app if you don't want to. Whispersync titles can be downloaded to your computer and transferred just like any other title.

All Whispersync for Voice means is that the books support the server-side ability to maintain the same last-read position in the audio book and the text version of the book. That feature may or may not be functional with the iPod music app, I don't know, but there is nothing different about the books themselves. They are just like any other Audible book, so they will play if any Audible books will.

Now I have another question. Over the years I've acquired about 3 Audible accounts because of promotions. I got a free iPod with one, which an Audible CSR advised me to open a new account to get.

So I've got purchased books from three different accounts and I am not currently a subscriber. But I presume the one of my accounts is hooked up to Amazon and is the one I need to download the whisper sync books from. Is there a place that is listed?

Correct. These are normal Audible books (and normal Kindle books) that can stand alone, but the "secret sauce" of WhisperSync for Voice is that Amazon is providing a way to sync position across both (and offering a discount on one if you own the other).

There is now a mechanism to combine your Amazon-Audible account and an old pre-Amazon Audible account into one, and the libraries will be merged.

Not sure about the third account, but a call to Audible support will certainly get your questions answered authoritatively, and they will walk you through the account merge, too if you like.

But free and 99 cent audio books have sure padded my library nicely these last few months!

Actually my last couple acquisitions were $1.99 each (the John Ceepak mysteries). Still cheap, and covered by that $5 coupon!
