That is the texture of the PW screen, it's not a coating you can clean away Glad you are happy with it! Enjoy it!

The Kindle Paperwhite 1 also has a "scratchy" screen. It is not as smooth as the touchscreen of a phone or tablet. It's just how these screens are. You can't clean that off. Don't forget the iPhone, and most other smartphones and tablets have a glass pane in front of the actual screen, which e-Ink readers don't have. If they had, they would have a lot of glare in a lot more situations than they do now.

The total cost of the PW (without special offers) and cover including sales tax was $200, which is a lot for me. But, if I get as much use out of the PW as I have with the KK, it will be money well spent.

Good luck I'm still quite satisfied with my KPW1, and even if I get another reader at some point in time, I think the KPW1 will just stay along.

No, the PW1 had many more reported issues when it came out last year, including also white smudges between the screen layers, and really horrible green-pink blotches, which are alomost all gone this year. It appears that the QC on the PW1s improved over time.

More likely, it is another quality-control issue.
For some reason, all ereaders I have owned, regardless of brand, seemed to suffer from huge within-model variation. Something about the manufacturing process has not been ironed out...

I don't think it's suppose to be washed out look at this user's PW2. The contrast is just as sharp as his PW1.

eInk varies remember the K4S and the K4B contrast difference? I think we are dealing with the same issue. Whatever Amazon did to fix the K4s QC they need to use on the PW2 now.

Every picture I've seen so far shows the paperwhite 2 to have a yellow screen in comparison to the paperwhite 1. I'm now 90% sure that I won't be upgrading.

BTW, I'm still waiting for my PaperWhite and the wait is definitely killing me (slowly).

I've cancelled my pre order today, it's just too much trouble right now. Maybe next year when things have settled I'll think about it again but right now the 'will I get a good one, or won't I' is just one issue too much.

Xendula is the only one in the US I know that is reading in German and has already received the PW2. It is not yet out in Europe, so you'll have to wait and see what she says. I am not annoyed at the question as such, but at the way it was asked.

I am not a native speaker - obviously - but I was a little annoyed when I did not get a reply to my first post.

Yes, I am aware of the fact that the PW will not be available in Germany before 9 Oct. Nevertheless I expect hyphenation to work as well in English text however less frequent.
