Calibre 1.0 & 0.8.x (with library in dropbox), will that be OK?

Hi, I use Calibre 0.8.something (on a 2005 powermac G5) to access my library wihich is stored in a Dropbox folder so that I can access that same library on a 2009 macbookpro (using Calibre 0.9.something) and also from a PC (windows, Calibre 0.9.something). This has worked pretty well so far. Before jumping to Calibre 1.0 on both PC and macbookpro, since I'm stuck with 0.8 on my 2005 Mac (that I intend to continue using), I would like to know if there could be issues between the 1.0 Calibre library file and the old 0.8 Calibre software? Thanks in advance for any answer, Max |

There should not be. I use a similar setup only I use Copy.com for cloud storage (I have 45 GB free ). The only thing they say to keep in mind is to never let your cloud sync app run at the same time as Calibre, as that will mess it up. |

1.0 maintains database format compatibility, so you should have no issues.

Is this true? I've been backing up my Calibre library on Copy via a shortcut link for a while now and it frequently sync's while I am running Calibre and have had no issues (yet!)...am I playing with fire?

You have managed to not get caught by locking contention. Play the game long enough and you will lose

Yes, it most definitely is true. YOu absolutely must not run two programs that can make changes to the same library at the same time.

Thanks Kovid....this I knew never to do! Maybe I misunderstood the other statement. I was worried about backup synching to the cloud while running Calibre on only one computer, not using/synching across more than one computer at the same time. Similar to having the Calibre library folder inside DropBox folder... or should one pause upward backup synching when using Calibre?

Yes, that is what I meant. You should pause syncing while running calibre. Both the sync program and calibre could make changes to the same files/folders at the same time, which is a recipe for problems.

Got It! Pause synching. Never, ever have two things touch Calibre Library folder at the same time....Thanks!!

Thanks everyone for yours answers and clues. The backward compatibility of the Calibre database is a blessing for (very) heterogeneous environments. Thanks again to the Calibre team. Max |
