The producers of the documentary make the assertions; Salinger gave the instructions. Is it that complicated?

Why do the producers of the documentary have to make assertion if he gave instructions? He either gave instructions or he didn't. If he did, then his lawyers would be following through with said instructions and it would be known. If it wasn't suppose to be known and was leaked then there is a problem some where that needs to be addressed (see JKR recent leak).

You didn't just mention JK Rowling in the same breath as Salinger, did you? At least with her you can be sure that once she croaks, any old crap she ever wrote will be published. First draft of the Quidditch rules, anyone?

If Salinger's lawyers leaked that he left instructions for books to be released when they were not suppose to then that is the same as JKR's leaking that she is writing under a pen name. A breach of confidentiality. If Salinger left instructions for works to be released then there really is no reason for a detailed assertion that said instructions were left in a documentary. If they are using hints and trying to piece together that said instructions exist there is the possibility that the law firm is responsible for a leak and that would be a breach of confidentiality. So yes, I mentioned them in the same breath because confidentiality is confidentiality is confidentiality no matter what you think of the caliber of author. |

Or perhaps the leak is part of the plan (in both cases, so granted, another parallel...). But I have to stop thinking about Rowling now, or I'll go |

There is no mention of Salinger’s lawyers in the text, it only says that there are two independent sources for the assertion. As we cannot know if those sources have been sworn to confidentiality, it is mere speculation to say that it has been breached. And of course there’s reason for a detailed assertion as long as Salinger’s family declines to officially confirm said instructions. |

If he didn't ever want the work published, he should have destroyed it.

Still, this info doesn’t come from some cheap gossip site, but from someone who invested nine years of research in his film and book and convinced PBS and the Weinstein Company of his project, and while it’s perfectly possible that he invented his sources to sell more books (the two years before the truth will come out in 2015 should be enough for that), it’s not far-fetched to think that he just wants to protect his sources—something that was called journalism a long time ago. I’m still cautiously optimistic. | |

Out of curiosity; Did he live on the income of Catcher in the Rye all these years? That was enough to sustain him and his family?

Yep. Selling the film rights set him for life.

Oh, great, another rumour. If Wikipedia is right, about 250,000 copies of Catcher in the Rye are sold each year. Should be enough. |

In an alternate universe? Salinger refused to sell the film rights. There has been noise lately that the rights might be sold now that he's dead, but your assertion is flat out wrong.

Damn. You caught me out, though I was making such a nice detailed assertion...
