Perhaps you should be pitching for an automatic screen brightness control? Add a sensor and adjust the brightness based on ambient light. Regards, David

Maybe I'm out of the usual way of things, but I'd really like a hardware brightness control.

I will admit a prejudice for being able to adjust the brightness level with as much of a page from the book in view as possible. It really does make sense as the amount of white space on the page is directly related to overall brightness/contrast. Because of that I'd prefer not seeing the menu bars at top and bottom during adjustment, and only seeing as narrow a brightness adjustment bar displayed over the text as is needed for comfortable access, preferably at display bottom. I'll take it one step farther and ask why they can't simply use a long press of the Light button to bring up the dialog for brightness control, and a night mode option, since such an elegant and simple method has been found to work? Granted the night mode is not perfect due to the way contrast is slanted to improve normal text display with e_ink displays, but that certainly doesn't prevent the brightness dialog from being called up that way. David for, Apparently great minds not only think alike, they do it at virtually the same time... Last edited by TechniSol; 07-25-2013 at 12:32 AM. |

Hi all, a quick question, my Aura is still on 2.6.1, I did not get the b update yet nor this 2.8.1 is that normal? Should I have at least received 2.6.1b by now? Thanks!

I have to ask, what would two taps and move a slider be? In any case, I remain unconvinced. It feels to me like you are only concerned about this one use-case. What about people who want to adjust the brightness from the main page? Would you put the brightness controls in both spots? How many other functions would you move to the book page? Do you consider the brightness control a system level function or a reading function? Can you see any value to putting all the system level functions together? Can you see any value to keeping the reading page as simple as possible? Again, it seems to me that you are just arguing from the perspective of getting as few taps as possible for this one use-case. Perhaps if you think about the whole UI, you will decide that there was some value in Kobo's decision, and perhaps you will decide it wasn't completely a mistake after all, even if it wasn't a perfect decision for your use.

2.6.1b was different. It was a small change to fix something. It would only have gone out to people who didn't already have 2.6.1 installed, or who did a factory reset after 2.6.1b was released.

Also deployments of new versions like 2.8.1 are staggered so you might have to wait a few more days for it.

Hi If this allows at least one person to avoid some of my mistakes, it will serve its purpose. Upgrading Glo I tried to upgrade from 2.5.1. to 2.8.1. I thought it was an elementary task. - Using "sync" only managed to perfect - after a long time using Wifi - my 2.5.1. firmware. - After that, I reinitialized my Glo (long press + light button press), it wiped all my books, took me quite a long time to finally land in 2.6.1. - This time, I looked for information, downloaded the 2.8.1. firmware, side-loaded it in .kobo folder (upgrade + manifest + koboroot) and finally got it working. Morals 1. R.T.F.M. (the wiki is OK too...) 2. Save everything before, you never know |
