Could be. Jeffrey Deaver came to mind when I read the original question, his Kathryn Dance series specifically, since she's a kinesiologist and there's a lot of emphasis on psychology in the books.

The other contemporary author I'd recommend is John Hart, his thrillers have very well fleshed out characters and their motivations are central to the story.

John Hart is a good one! I wish his books were available through the library, but I will probably bite the bullet and buy the ones that I have not read yet.

The reason I say that Jack Reacher is not a good fit is because I did read some in order. The first few books just don't work for what the OP wants.

*sigh* Once again I've been drawn into JSWolf's foolishness. Probably what he wants...but here goes...

I'll say again: "characters who are smart about their actions and optimize their decisions", requested by the OP, describes Reacher perfectly. He is a very shrewd and calculating character. I've read the first TWELVE books in the series so far. And YES, I've read them in order so I'm hoping that qualifies me to have an opinion.

The OP is perfectly free to dismiss any recommendation. They don't need you as self-appointed policeman enforcing your own arcane and pedantic recommendation "rules".
