tm3 isn't the only person who has recommended the Reacher series, do you want to question us all on what order we've read them in just because you disagree with recommendation!?!

The other contemporary author I'd recommend is John Hart, his thrillers have very well fleshed out characters and their motivations are central to the story.

I'll give a nod to the Temperance Brennen series by by Kathy Reichs.

It is sad that you have to try to attract attention to yourself by being critical of others. I feel sorry for you.

The reason I say that Jack Reacher is not a good fit is because I did read some in order. The first few books just don't work for what the OP wants.

I'll say again: "characters who are smart about their actions and optimize their decisions", requested by the OP, describes Reacher perfectly. He is a very shrewd and calculating character. I've read the first TWELVE books in the series so far. And YES, I've read them in order so I'm hoping that qualifies me to have an opinion. The OP is perfectly free to dismiss any recommendation. They don't need you as self-appointed policeman enforcing your own arcane and pedantic recommendation "rules".

Another series I can recommend is the Alex Cross series.

Where did Chris go? Still looking? Note that in his OP he does not say anything about "series." |
