I've never been charged a transaction fee, not for books or egift cards. I don't know what the terms of the card are, DH handles that, but I did check last month's statement to be sure. If I were buying from a Canadian website, .ca instead of .com, and prices were in Canadian dollars, a transaction fee would make sense. Also, when I made my Aura purchase today I was charged local sales tax. I wouldn't expect a Canadian company to have to collect that. I might be completely wrong, but I wouldn't expect them to. |

I live in Illinois and use Chase Visa and I was charged $169.99. I've been a Kobo customer for years and have never been charged a foreign transaction fee. And Chase does charge those fees, believe me.

Now that I think about this, way back when Kobo 1st started this was an issue since the everything went to a "Canadian" company so people were getting dinged with foreign transaction fees and blaming Kobo for taking that money even though it was their credit card company (and .com vs .ca means nothing in terms of whether you'll get charged this or not). It took them a while to get it set up so that they had a "U.S." presence so that US customers stopped being charged foreign transaction fees. There are probably a bunch of really old threads on this.

Here's the transaction on my credit card. I don't anticipate seeing a foreign fee on this as it clearly says "Kobo US." |

Yes, you will initially only see the $169.99 charge from Kobo. If there is a transaction fee it will be calculated and added by the bank and appear on the next statement, typically in a location where one sees credits and miscellaneous charges.

I did a pretend order and I wasn't charged sales tax. For ebooks I am charged tax. Unable to determine about foreign transaction fee. In any case, they should permit Paypal for ereader purchases. And Amex too. |

Independent devs will want to create more options for the Kobo as it rises in popularity. Given Kobo's potential commitment to our sort of interests -- as shown by the release of the Aura HD -- they might as it might.

I just ordered one at the Kobo USA site, it showed the tax for Texas (I guess), but none of the transaction "fees". I would expect to see that later on my Credit Union statement. Luck; Ken PS; Not really a fan of e-Ink displays, or a touchscreen as an ebook user interface but hoping that the great screen resolution makes up for that. Skydog: My apologies if my previous post sounded impolite. I assure you it wasn't intended that way. My response actually mentioned the idea you might not want to list every device you'd ever owned, but perhaps I didn't sound apologetic enough (and I say that without irony) about bringing up the idea of past devices. The key to my entire post, and the sole reason I asked you about this, was because I myself didn't know how important many PRS+ options would become to me until I used them. I had to point this out because people have been talking about features in the abstract: Dismissing them as unimportant without -- in some cases -- actually having tried and benefited from them. When someone says that features I find important are unnecessary, and that person seems not to own a device that offers them, my next logical question is whether that person has owned a reader that did in the past. The question is not meant in any way to discredit the person I'm talking to. It's only meant as a reason to suggest that familiarity with those features on a daily basis can make their usefulness more apparent -- and not just to people who are "picky" (to use a recurring word on this thread).
