Yeah, they've fixed it and asked me to test it. I haven't done that yet. Went to the beach yesterday and left all of this behind me for a while!

Note that Overdrive offers the Standard version of Readerworks as freeware. The download link takes you to a screen asking for name, email address, address and phone number as "required" fields, but just providing name and email address worked for me.

Unfortunately, the Standard version doesn't support cover art or embedded images. It does try to build a Table of Contents, assuming suitable HTML tags exist in the source document.

Blasted system just ate my last attempt...

Anyway, I have a .lit version almost ready to go. But I've got a daughter to get back to college, so all this goes on hold for another day. Enjoy your Labor Day, everyone! (Those of you in the U.S., anyway.)

Jeff,

I tried downloading the LRF from your site, but I can't seem to extract it from the ZIP. I don't know what the deal is.

It works fine here. It extracted from the Zip file with no problem, creating an 888kb LRF file, and opened with no problem in the Sony Library software.

What system are you on, and what are you using to unzip it? I run Windows XP SP3, and use the free, open source 7zip to handle Zip and other archive types.

You may have a corrupt download. The Zip file should have an MD5 hash of 5180A6E80E9AF8E6F0AC5EFB65DF1576

I've been using WinRAR to unzip files, but I hadn't updated it in a while. Once I updated it, it worked.

The built-in Zip capability of XP didn't seem to work either.

Oh, good. I looked at WinRAR years back, but I have no need to create RAR archives, so I passed. Lots of things (including 7zip) can extract them.

No surprise. While Zip is a documented format in the public domain, there are a variety of different compression algorithms used to produce Zip archives, and it's possible to create relatively non-portable Zip files when trying to squeeze out that last bit of compression.

Perhaps the chap who created the LRF version will chime in and tell us what he used to make the archive.

Actually, I made the zipfile, using an old version of Winzip. So that might have contributed to your difficulty. In any case, I've just updated the page; it now points to the unzipped LRF file, and at least for me, it worked fine on a test. If anyone has a problem, let me know.

(My web service added the correct MIME format to their system.)

I've also uploaded a new Microsoft Reader (.lit) version, made for me by yet another helpful member here.

Strange Attractors will be going to my stalwart conversion crews probably tomorrow. I just need to do a new scan of the cover.

Wohoo - just at the right moment - I am almost finished with "Star Rigger's Way".
(I liked it quite a bit - after I got over the first few chapters and began to care about the characters. The character exposition in the "dream pool" (IIRC) did wonders to immerse me in the story.)
Back on topic - I can't wait to read about where John Bandicut ended up ... damned cliffhanger endings

The website has been fixed so you can download the LRF directly now instead of a ZIP file.

That's interesting. I would have thought the rights to the cover would be held separately, by either the artist or the publisher... or are you including only a low-resolution scan under the "fair use" reasoning?

Send it along.

Incidentally, do you still have electronic copy for Seas of Ernathe around? Laser Books editions are a little hard to find these days.

It might be an excellent candidate for a future ebook release, and a boon to completists who want the complete Starrigger's series.
