Is iPad mini 2 coming soon?

What do you think of the iPad mini. So many rumors about the nxet-gen iPad mini are overwhelming the web. Yesterday several photos of the alleged back cover of the iPad mini 2 were leaked, too. Is the iPad mini really coming soon?

Indeed, becuase the current iPad mini will be useless and unable to function the minute the new is released. Actually, it will be so obselete that the functionality it had prior will be removed from time and people will only remember it as a brick of stone.

you are not so far from the truth despite your sarcasm...with the next ios version the first gen mini as well as ipad2 will be just that: an expensive doormat with a poor resolution screens ( but good for doormat standards)

just to be clear, i think the same fate is expecting ipad3 as well...but, its screen will be the best among doormats...

Please links giving this information... or is this the usual rumour/disinformation/I hate that company posting... and how does later OS versions not working on older gear differ for Android tablets/phones, PCs etc... I've got an Android tablet that won't go beyond 2.2 and many older PCs choke on later Win versions...

I suppose we could declare a moratorium on all software upgrades that take advantage of more modern hardware...

More than likely. Apple's strategy is to milk a product for all it's worth by holding back key features and then releasing them incrementally in succeeding generations.

There really is no good reason why they withheld the retina display from the first gen iPad mini. The technology was fully baked and Apple chose to ignore it.

My speculation is that they did so because of greed. But hey, that's my opinion.

The difference is that with iOS, it is a "forced march" to upgrade. "Forced march" may be it tiny bit of an exaggeration, but Apple does not make it easy for one to ignore the fact that an upgrade is available. Their ecosystem is designed to move people up to the next version. There's a reason that reports compiled days/weeks after an Apple OS update show that significant percentage of people have upgraded.

The "nagging" of the notification flag on the settings icon (that an OS update is available) is simply that...nagging.

If you accidentally upgrade there is no supported way to downgrade back. iOS 4.x and 5.x on an iPod Touch 4G runs fine. But iOS 6.x brings many 4G iPod Touches to nearly being unusable.

What are these people to do? Apple's recommendation is that they buy a 5th gen iPod Touch.

Some applaud Apple for "supporting" previous generations of hardware when updating the OS, but they don't realize that the overall usability and ownership experience gets downgraded. One update too many and the device becomes seriously hamstrung...which then "justifies" buying Apple's latest and greatest version in spite of the fact that were it not for upgrading to that OS version, the device would still have plenty of life remaining.

Out of all the Android devices that I've owned, only those attempting to emulate Apple's ecosystem (Amazon Kindle Fire, B&N Nook Color) have required, nagged, harassed me into upgrading.

Wouldn't they wait until Christmas time to release a new product just in time for the holiday shopping season? Would they release two iPad Minis in one year?

no they wouldn't...they want your money now...and several times a year

Depends on your definition of important and major... I suspect it differs from mine... mind it does make a good digital photoframe now...

Sure.
They released two iPads last year. And kept a third on sale as entry-level fodder.
So there is nothing to stop them from releasig a Mini 2 next month. In fact, they probably will. All they have to do is drop the price of the current mini to $299 and slot the Retina Mini at $399.

It'll work just fine: if you think XGA is perfection, you save $100.

Battery life, weight and supply issues with the display.

My Asus Transformer TF700 nags me to upgrade, too. Unlike Apple's iOS updates, though, the upgrade improved UI performance instead of bringing the device to a crawl.
