Kindle Firmware Updates don't seem to d/l

I had been expecting the Kindle Touch firmware to be auto d/l-ed to my device eventually.. I guess that doesn't happen any more? I attempted to do a manual update and I can't seem to d/l any firmware updates from Amazon. Is anyone else seeing this problem? I am trying the link on this page: http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/custom...deId=200790650 But it just spins and spins. Any ideas? Is perchance this why my device hasn't auto updated? BOb |

I just tried it and the update downloads fine for me (using Chrome). As far as the auto update I didn't bother to update my K3 manually and it just updated itself (WiFi's been on) a couple of weeks ago and that update came out a long time ago so I guess it can take some time. |

It works fine for me too, I'm also using chrome. I only update manually so not sure about auto updates and how long they take. I'd probably give Amazon Kindle CS a call and see what they suggest.

I too wonder why it takes so long for the Kindle to automatically update itself. I kept the Wi-Fi turned on for a few days hoping that it would install the update, but in the end I had to manually install the update. Also, my PW arrived with 5.3.1 installed while 5.3.3 was already released.

Thanks for letting me know it was working. I do use Chrome. However, since you said it was working I loaded up IE10 and was able to d/l it with that. Strange. Now to run it. BOb |

And of course, Kindles arrive with the firmware they have been produced with. Do you expect Amazon to open all packages in stock and reflash all devices, every time they release a new firmware? | |

@ixtab: Yep, I understand how it works. Still, they push their updates much slower than other companies who work with the same method. With iOS, for example, it can be a question of hours or sometimes days before receiving a system update, not weeks. I understand the technicality of it and I'm not complaining, I was just surprised considering the previous faster experience with any device that I have ever owned, including a Nook ST. Same thing goes for shipping the product at 5.3.1 while 5.3.3 is out. It appears that 5.3.1 was released in early December and 5.3.2 in early January. I bought the device almost in February, so the OS was two-months old. I understand why it happens, it's just surprising. Of course, it's justified by the fact that the demand for ereaders is not HUGE. |

Using the iOS example, I found out iOS 6.1 was available. my iPhone 5 did not tell me there was an update. But when I did the check, I was told there was an update and I then updated. No reason Amazon cannot work the same way.

So what? They are doing it their way, and they probably have a reason for doing so, even if you don't see it. (Frankly, I don't see it either.)

I just thought of this. There is one potential difference between OTA and manual via a computer. OTA might be doing so using 3G and Amazon is paying for that were doing so via computer, Amazon is not paying for that.

Nope, that can't be the reason. Unless I'm terribly misinformed, OTA updates won't be automatically downloaded over 3G, only over Wifi.
