It stopped snowing by 11 pm here - and began melting - which froze by morning. Only got an inch or so - but lots of ice until the sun came out!

The problem is snow getting into the locks - followed either by freezing rain or VERY cold temps - which freezes the snow inside the lock into ice.

Ok, that makes sense. Mine have still never done it, but I park either in a garage or in the sheltered spot between houses that is our driveway.

They sell gadgets to defrost locks, but who buys one in advance? Saw one just the other day. They have a slim rod, about 2" long ... which the gadget heats up a little bit. You shove the heated rod into the lock and voila! On the other hand, without that, you have to hold your warm fingers over the lock until the fingers freeze and the lock UN freezes. But mine hasn't frozen in ages, so no gadget.

Back in the old days, when everyone carried lighters, you could heat your key slightly and melt your way into the lock - BUT you had to get it out fast - before the key froze in place!

Whatever you do, do NOT breath on the lock trying to unthaw it. You risk getting your lips and/or tongue frozen to the lock.

*Yes - she was blonde. Why do you ask? Several days later, she told me (with suitable blushes) "I realized what I said. I'm carrying the lighter in my purse."* *Yes - she was a blonde out of a bottle. Reassuring, isn't it?

Ugh is all I can say. Thankfully we're a month past the solstice and the sun is almost starting to feel like it has some heat again when it is out. |
