I don't have any blotchiness even reading on it at 4 in the dark. One thing you will notice as you turn the light down that the eInk pixelly background began to show through the light giving that same muttle look that all eInk eReaders have. Some eyes might see that as blobs but it isn't. I'm not saying the blobs don't exist I've seen too many pics to know they do but this is a separate issue. There is no way you can expect a perfect white screen with the setting so low. eInk just doesn't work that way. This is a limitation I'm don't think can be fixed. However at higher settings you should see a even white lighting across the screen. Well it's not white white more like fluorescent white. |

Unfortunately I don't think all PW lights strength are the same. I read at 8 in the indoor lighting and 4 in the dark. 10 is a little too bright but anything above it is just way too bright for me. |

My cat always growls when he shows up due to his squeaky brakes. So I didn't need to do the pacing but maybe I did to work off some of those Holiday goodies I ate. |

That looks like a terrific quality screen on your Kindle Blossom - how they should ALL be!
The pictures Scarpad has posted are I guess an example of how photos can look different to reality, for me at least, the first one isn't too bad, some colours but not too bad, but the second one looks quite blotchy?! |

As for your reading light level: Give it some time, maybe a week or two, and you might get tired of messing with the light every time you go different places. What works for me is to simply put it at the level that is good for dark room / night reading, and never touch it again no matter where I read. For me it is 12 at the moment. When I got the PW brand new I had it around 5. I was afraid that too bright would tire my eyes out too fast so I set it as dark as possible and still be able to read with a small font. The display is so great, that reading it a bit brighter does not wear your eyes out as other (e.g. lcd) screens might. So I experimented, and now rather than set it to as dark as possible I changed my mindset to set it to as bright as possible, just before it appears too bright. YMMV And here is some fun facts about your eyes, which I think has a lot to do why everybody has their own personal view of the world. Since it might be boring to some, and a bit too technical, definately a little bit off-topic I will just encase it in a spoiler. Spoiler:

Guess the lighting is different on the PW, 4 would be so dark I wouldn't be able to see anything. I use 10 in the dark and in the daylight, works good for me now. I gradually worked my way up from 5. That is what is recommended by Amazon too. Wonder how long the LED lights will last before they burn out? Any ideas? By then I will want a newer version of the PW. I had to return my KFHD, Amazon agreed something is not right with my battery. Sigh...... I get to reload all of my stuff again. |

Even hubby says there is no way he can read it at 17. He has perfect vision. It's just too bright on my PW. It's a very powerful light. I can stand 10 it's readable but not for too long. 8 is perfect for me. 4 for reading at night. I turn it down in the dark due to a 6'1 275lb grouch in the bed next too me that I call my darling hubby. Everyone here knows how many book lights, K3 lighted case and Kindle Fire I have tried for night reading and he complains about them all. So far no complaints on the Paperwhite. |

All that matters is that you are happy with the PW you received. I am very happy with mine. |
